About the Role

The Aqua Aerobics Instructor teaches choreographed water aerobics classes to increase the health and physical fitness of patrons, conducts courses and activities, and serves as an ambassador for the Aquatic Center with a cheerful and positive attitude. This position reports to the Aquatic Center Director.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related areas to ensure a sanitary and safe facility.
  • Assists the Activities Coordinator with organizing and scheduling classes to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Conducts water aerobics courses and activities to increase patrons' health and physical fitness.
  • Prepares choreographed routines and music accompaniment for water aerobics classes.
  • Prepares logs, reports, and documents (e.g., registration/booking systems, progress reports) to convey information and meet mandated requirements.
  • Promotes a safe and enjoyable learning environment for participants in swimming activities.
  • Provides a creative, educational service for students, the public, and other user groups.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints related to the aerobics program, greeting patrons and providing program information.
  • Serves as an ambassador of the Lee's Summit R-VII School District, engaging with the public in a respectful, professional, and positive manner.
  • Performs other related duties to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic math, reading, and writing to perform tasks such as analyzing situations, following prescribed formats, and presenting information.
  • Specific knowledge of codes, laws, regulations, and policies; safety practices; health standards; age-appropriate activities; community resources; methods of instruction; and school safety and security practices.
  • Skills in training, supervision, office practices, administering first aid and CPR, effective listening, leadership, and guiding others.
  • Ability to schedule activities, gather and collate data, and use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with diverse individuals, adapt to changing work priorities, handle frequent interruptions, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, and work as part of a team.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify issues and create action plans, including independent interpretation of guidelines.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and communicate effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds and skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility, preferably in group fitness instruction or personal training, with the ability to adapt land-based fitness principles to an aquatic environment.
  • CPR certification and First Aid certification for the Professional Rescuer (renewed annually).
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Passing a pre-employment proficiency test.

Working Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, as well as some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. The job involves 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The environment is generally hazard-free with minimal temperature variations.
