Aquarist

About the role

The Aquarist provides husbandry care for animals housed at Bass Pro Store and executes related work to maintain the exhibits. Responsibilities include scuba diving to clean aquariums, performing fish feeding shows, and analyzing water quality via multiple instrument testing.

Responsibilities

• Maintain animal life support systems, including plumbing, pumps, filters, foam fractionators, heaters, and other aquarium components.
• Maintain familiarity with all aspects of life support systems, including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
• Complete all items on assigned maintenance schedule.
• Perform fish feeding shows, including diving and narration.
• Assist in record keeping for all exhibits, including holding tanks.
• Prepare and distribute diets for all animals.
• Perform water quality tests and analyze results for trends or potential issues.
• Provide general care for snakes, alligators, and ducks.
• Perform biopsies and assist in the identification of parasites and other problems.
• Provide objective reporting to management on animal behavior and health.
• Travel to local sites to perform maintenance tasks and pick up supplies.

Requirements

• Certified scuba diver (must provide copy of dive certification).
• Certified First Aid / CPR.
• Class E driver’s license.
• Limited mechanical and plumbing experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; ongoing verification of driving eligibility will be conducted.
• Must be at least 21 years old.

• Ability to observe and act upon relevant changes in animal behaviors and conditions.
• Adaptability with a changing schedule when working with animals.
• Understanding of practical principles of animal behavior and the ability to work with live animals safely.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, push, or pull 50 pounds.
