About the role

The Aptitude Superintendent 2 manages and executes complex projects related to intelligent integration. This role oversees Aptitude Intelligent trade partners, plans construction sequencing, and ensures timely, profitable project completion. Decision-making occurs within defined limits, with consultation as needed. Career progression leads to Senior Aptitude Superintendent.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the company’s safety culture, demonstrating commitment to an injury-free environment through actions and mentoring. Investigate safety incidents and retrain staff as needed.
  • Handle all client and project team communication and issue escalation related to low voltage scopes of work.
  • Coordinate technology-related design and construction efforts to meet constructability, quality, financial, and technical standards.
  • Manage company staff, low voltage technology subcontractors, suppliers, and programs such as Safety, Quality, and EEO for small projects or major portions of larger projects.
  • Develop work plans for low voltage technology subcontractors and self-performed work.
  • Coordinate and manage care, custody, and control of assigned low voltage scope of work.
  • Create, manage, change, and implement the project’s schedule in conjunction with the Aptitude Project Manager. Track and monitor project budget and costs using project management systems.
  • Communicate key project information to owners, design teams, governing authorities, subcontractors, suppliers, and other departments.
  • Update drawings, logs, diaries, and inspection notebooks. Approve and record unit cost information for weekly reports and complete daily reports, logs, and tracking reports.
  • Evaluate progress on self-perform work and adjust as needed. Manage material and equipment needs for the project.
  • Assist in selecting formwork, tools, and equipment for low voltage technology systems installation and implementation.
  • Manage timecard approval to ensure accurate hours and proper cost codes.
  • Coordinate with all trades to ensure low voltage technology systems conduit, pathway, and back-box infrastructure are installed prior to cabling and device installation.
  • Ensure quality compliance through specifications, setting quality standards, in-house QA/QC, and outside resources.
  • Support project closeouts by supervising pre-punch activities and coordinating with the owner, architect, and governing authorities.
  • Participate in the new project pursuit process and field operations leadership to create, implement, monitor, and adjust project pre-plans.
  • Partner with leadership to establish a local workforce for assigned projects and with project management to identify schedule and cost impacts of changes.
  • Prepare and present materials for project review meetings, including monthly reviews.
  • Understand and apply terms and conditions of owner and subcontractor contracts.
  • Lead, support, and promote a culture of diversity and inclusion within JE Dunn. Ensure positive, proactive implementation of non-discrimination policies.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Manage complex projects from start to finish, assuming responsibility for scheduling, production, quality, and safety.
  • Identify, understand, and actively manage project risks for assigned scopes of work.
  • Use awareness, experience, and knowledge to identify problems and recommend solutions for team review and implementation.
  • Participate in project pursuits and negotiations with owners and architects to agree on project changes.
  • Engage trade partners as needed to execute scopes of work.
  • Apply knowledge of Low Voltage Systems Connections to daily project deliverables.
  • Configure and program project-to-project software for testing and troubleshooting as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field (Preferred). Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree requirements.
  • 5+ years of construction experience (Required).
  • 5+ years of experience in Division 8/23/25/27/28 related systems (Required).
  • 3+ years of field supervision experience (Required).
  • 5+ years of experience managing projects (Preferred).

Skills

  • Ability to perform work accurately and completely in a timely manner.
  • Thorough understanding of low voltage technology systems, including structured cabling, access control, video surveillance, fire alarm, audio-visual, building automation, nurse call, infant security, RTLS, phone systems, and network electronics.
  • Thorough understanding and ability to work across multiple vertical markets.
  • Extensive knowledge of all Low Voltage Systems Connections.
  • Ability to configure and program project-to-project software for testing and troubleshooting.
  • Intermediate communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to conduct effective presentations.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office.
  • Ability to apply fundamentals of construction management means and methods to projects.
  • Knowledge of project processes and how each supports successful project completion.
  • Proficiency in required JE Dunn construction technology.
  • Ability to apply Lean process and philosophy.
  • Intermediate demonstrated knowledge of specific trades and low voltage scopes of work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of self-perform and labor productivity.
  • Ability to manage budgets, maximize profitability, and generate future work through relationship-building.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Div 8/23/25/27/28 low voltage systems.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure and available resources.
  • Basic understanding of blueprint drawings.
  • Ability to understand document changes and their impact on the project schedule.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.

Working Environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May require periods of travel and/or relocation.
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold).
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet project needs.
  • Frequent activities: Standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching above shoulder, pushing, pulling.
  • Occasional activities: Sitting, viewing computer screen.
