About the role

The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is nationally recognized and registered with the United States Department of Labor. This one-year (2000 hour) program will provide in-depth training (both on the job and classroom) to prepare participants for a fully operational Traffic Signal Technician position. Apprentices will be assigned to a seasoned professional as a mentor for the duration of the program. Upon successful completion, participants will receive national certification.

Responsibilities

  • Install, operate and maintain various micro-computer based traffic subsystems including: inductive loop detection systems, radar vehicle detection system, video detection and video surveillance systems, emergency vehicle pre-emption system, conflict monitors and tester, programmable audible/tactile pedestrian detection system, and the school zone flasher system.
  • Operation of fiber optics and Ethernet mesh radio communications equipment including fiber optic switches.
  • Work together with IT System Administrator to design, install, and maintain miles of fiber optics facilities plus radio communications for traffic, other city-wide uses, and the various users in and outside of Public Works.
  • Cell phone and fiber communications for transmission to CDOT’s statewide Central Traffic Monitoring Center and use by PW Street Division and other city staff.
  • Annual preventative maintenance program field work on all systems. These systems include multi million dollars of ITS assets.
  • Operation of bucket trucks, dump trucks, forklifts, underground locate equipment, and various power and hand tools.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience in electronics, computers or a similar field preferred.
  • Must possess a valid commercial driver license (CDL) instruction permit.
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • Driver instruction and training is provided by the organization.
  • The CDL license training is subject to the condition that you must repay the City of Loveland three thousand dollars, $3,000.00 in the event you resign or you are terminated for cause within twenty-four (24) months after your starting date with the City.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate personal computers, electronic test equipment, aerial lift trucks, hand tools, underground locating equipment, and forklift trucks for installation, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Work in the field under all types of weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
  • Occasional exposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against.

Medical Leave – Up to 48 hours accrued. Accrue 1 hour of leave per 30 hours worked
Per the ACA, employees working 30 Plus hours per week are eligible to enroll in one of the two 2 medical plan options – HRA & ACO

Pay

The starting hourly rate is $22.06 per hour.

Additional Working Demands/Conditions

  • Considered essential personnel required to report for duty as directed in response to community emergencies (e.g. natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.).
  • This position requires a CDL.
