Apprentice Power Plant Operator-Mechanic

Status: Full-time, non-exempt, union position

About the role

The Apprentice Power Plant Operator-Mechanic is an entry-level role which will train with and support the following classifications: Repairman, Welder, Machinist, Electrician, and Generator Operator. This position requires completion of online correspondence educational coursework annually, along with 8,000 hours of on-the-job training over a 4-year period. Before progressing to a Journeyman Power Plant Operator-Mechanic position, the Apprentice must successfully complete the apprenticeship and maintain the following nationally recognized certifications/licensures:

• Mobile Crane Operator-Telescopic Boom Crane-Swing Cab
• Overhead Crane Operator-Cab Operated
• Rigger and Signalperson
• Class A Commercial Driver's License
• State of Michigan Boater Safety Certificate

Responsibilities

• Assist journeymen in identifying and fixing problems in the plant and associated water passage structures; communicate findings and assist in devising repair workplans.
• Operate various systems or machinery based on instructions or specifications, including equipment operation, leveling and aligning turbines and generators, adjusting wicket gates, and operating turbine control board panels.
• Inspect the exterior and physical integrity of hydropower facilities and dams; climb ladders to inspect, troubleshoot, or repair equipment.
• Collect turbine data for testing or research and analysis; perform routine maintenance on hydropower plant machinery, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical malfunctions; replace worn or malfunctioning components; operate hydropower plant equipment in accordance with specifications.
• Perform general powerhouse mechanical equipment maintenance, including identification and correction of problems causing malfunctions, and periodic or unscheduled maintenance/repair of equipment such as turbines, generators, governors, spillway and intake hoist equipment, pneumatic devices, HVAC equipment, sewage and water treatment facilities, and hydraulic equipment.
• Operate a gate hoist, overhead cranes, hydraulic boom cranes, boat, forklift, dump truck, tractor, aerial lifts, and canal head gates.
• Complete on-the-job training (OJT) hours working with electricians, welders, machinists, and generator operators to apply knowledge from educational coursework.
• Assist with job set-up and completion, ensuring tools and equipment are available; clean and return tools and equipment to respective locations.
• Promote and follow safety consciousness and compliance; participate in job hazard analyses, safety meetings, and maintain a safe working environment.
• Respond to after-hours calls for immediate or emergent repairs within the hydro plant system or diesel facilities.
• Complete cooperative safety training and attend trainings/seminars to increase job knowledge.
• Perform other related duties and assume responsibilities as requested or directed.

Working Conditions

• Work is both indoor and outdoor with variable temperatures; plant temperatures may range from subzero to high heat and humidity.
• Available for work during adverse weather conditions.
• Good physical condition and dexterity required; moving weights of 100 pounds or more may be necessary.
• Medium work requiring exertion of up to 50-75 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently; lifting and carrying 10-50 pounds occasionally.
• Climbing, stooping, bending, reaching (overhead), pushing, pulling, and walking long distances or in poorly accessible sites.
• Exposure to noise levels averaging 80-100 decibels; protective equipment such as eye and ear protectors and hard hats required.
• Good hand-to-eye coordination and ability to read electronic displays, printed materials, and maps; capable of using handheld and manually operated tools.
• Must communicate clearly and accurately.
• Hazards include working at heights up to 50 feet, turbulent water, live electrical, and radiant energy.
• Willingness to submit to alcohol and drug testing per Cooperative policy.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• 2-3 years of experience in a skilled trade, preferred.
• Class A Commercial Driver's License, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
• Knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials used in various trades professions.
• Proficient knowledge of health and safety regulations.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
• Ability to work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches.
• Ability to troubleshoot and work independently with little direction.
• Personal characteristics: team player, high integrity, good personal habits, regular work attendance, courteous, friendly, tactful, persuasive, and ability to work well with diverse groups.

Accountabilities

• Reports to the Hydro Plant Manager.
• Accountable to Cooperative management for efficient performance of duties.
• Expected to use initiative and judgment in decision-making, keeping the Cooperative's best interest in mind.
• Expected to obtain and maintain nationally recognized certifications for Mobile Crane Operator, Overhead Crane Operator, Rigger and Signalperson, Class A Commercial Driver's License, and State of Michigan Boater Safety Certificate.
• Expected to complete and adhere to all correspondence coursework; failure to do so may result in termination and repayment of tuition.
