Apprentice

This position will be filled as an Apprentice 1st Year - 3rd Year depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Apprentice 1st Year

• Under close supervision, perform less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, underground systems, and related equipment.
• Use pole climbing equipment and handle self on pole in a safe and efficient manner.
• Handle, install poles, and assist in the erection of steel, wood, and other structures, including foundations.
• Make up and install guys and install secondaries.
• Connect services on energized conductors up to 600 volts.
• Install secondary racks and clevis, anchors, miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings for vertical type construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits.
• Perform simple transmission and distribution switching (with qualified lineman assistance).
• Tie knots and splice rope.
• Assist in trimming trees.
• Assist qualified lineman or mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance.
• Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems.
• Assist in the handling, moving, and installation of all transmission, distribution, and plant equipment and machinery.
• Prepare reports and records.
• Read and understand job drawings and maps and assist with Job Hazard Assessment.
• Operate Company’s vehicles and equipment.

Apprentice 2nd Year

• Under close supervision, perform less complicated tasks on high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, and equipment.
• Assist in the installation and removal of electric meters, services, and related equipment on customers' premises.
• Connect and disconnect service at the pole.
• Locate and repair all types of breaks in the electric transmission and distribution system.
• Answer electric trouble calls to customers' premises.
• Install crossarms, secondary racks and clevis, anchors and guys, and install hardware and fittings for vertical type construction, including conductors, single phase transformers, lightning arresters, grounds, cutouts, etc., on dead circuits.
• Trim trees.
• Under close supervision, cover and work energized circuits when confident and approved by supervisor.
• Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of street lighting equipment and fixtures.
• Direct work of helpers and apprentices as required.
• Refuse transformers and circuit breakers and check grounds.
• Inspect meters and meter loops for irregularities.
• Prepare records and reports.
• Check customer's wiring for accidental ground and proper secondary ground.
• Replace fuses on customer's premises.
• Execute non-payment disconnects.
• Operate Company’s vehicles and equipment.
• Assist qualified serviceman, lineman, or others in working on energized conductors up to 5,000 volts over 600 volts.
• Handle and work from ladders.
• Read meters, install and remove secondary meters and services.
• Make secondary load and voltage checks, set recording meters, and change charts.

Apprentice 3rd Year

• Under close and/or directive supervision, perform tasks of average difficulty involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, and equipment.
• Use hot line tools under close supervision of a qualified workman.
• Cover and work energized circuits under close supervision when confident and approved by supervisor.
• Fuse transformers and sectionalizing fuses.
• String, sag, and tie in conductors on dead lines of all classes.
• Install all types of transformer installations, make tap changes, and install primary metering equipment under supervision.
• Install, maintain, and repair street lighting equipment and fixtures.
• Assist in making aerial and submarine cable installations, including making joints and installing potheads.
• Assist in the installation of pole type regulators and transformers to boost or buck line voltage.
• Assist in phasing and checking rotation in circuits directly and with potential transformers.
• Assist in erecting and maintaining steel towers and outdoor substations.
• Direct work of helpers, apprentices, and underclassmen as required.
• Work energized conductors on simple structures, up to and including 5,000 volts over 600 volts.
• Run services, install and remove all types of secondary meters and related equipment.
• Replace fuse links in outdoor type cutouts and transformers.
• Install and remove temporary wiring for equipment.
• Assist in load and voltage checks on distribution transformers.
• Assist in checking phase sequence and rotations.
• Read and check all types of meters and change graphic charts.
• Give service and meter locations.
• Plan and lay out work in a safe and efficient manner.

Requirements

Apprentice 1st Year

• An Apprentice Lineman during the first three months in classification shall not work on circuits or equipment energized at more than 600 volts.
• During the second three months of apprenticeship, may perform structure inspections under specific conditions (energized primary circuits properly covered, no casual reach, no crossing poles, no structure maintenance).
• During the last six months of apprenticeship, may assist a qualified lineman in covering and working all voltages, with the qualified lineman present if voltage is above 600 volts.
• Learn Company’s safety rules and be willing and able to administer approved methods of resuscitation and render first aid.
• Know the location of and be able to operate firefighting equipment.
• Hold a current Class A CDL license or be willing and able to obtain one prior to progressing to Apprentice 2nd Year.
• Have knowledge of line and substation material and use of line and substation construction tools and equipment.

Apprentice 2nd Year

• Must have worked for at least one year as a qualified Apprentice 1st Year or have equivalent experience.
• Know Company’s safety rules and be willing and able to administer approved methods of resuscitation and render first aid.
• Know the location of and be able to operate firefighting equipment.
• Hold a current Class A CDL license.
• Know Company’s electrical and mechanical tagging rules.
• Know city streets and roads in rural sections.
• Have thorough knowledge of city and state traffic laws.
• Have thorough knowledge of Company regulations and state laws governing disconnects for nonpayment, repossession of merchandise, and diversion of current.
• Have general knowledge of electric circuits and equipment.
• Be familiar with Company's rules and regulations applying to service and meter installations, Underwriters' National Electrical Code, and any state or local regulations governing electrical wiring.
• Be willing and able to read and understand simple wiring diagrams and blueprints.

Apprentice 3rd Year

• Must have worked for at least one year as a qualified Apprentice 2nd Year or have equivalent experience.
• Know Company’s safety rules and be willing and able to administer approved methods of resuscitation and render first aid on or off the ground.
