Appr Electrician 6-A

Headquarters Location: 205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA. Employees will be assigned to work locations throughout the State of Georgia.

About the role

Multiple openings for Apprentice Electricians supporting the construction of transmission substations throughout Georgia. This role performs hands-on construction, installation, equipment operation, and field support activities in a physically demanding outdoor work environment.

Training Program

Candidates hired as Apprentice Electricians will participate in a comprehensive three- to four-year training program. Candidates with three or more years of substation experience may be placed in an accelerated 12- to 18-month training program based on experience, background, and demonstrated competency.

Schedule

This position typically follows a four-day, ten-hour work schedule. Overnight and out-of-town stays are required near construction sites, and employees may be away from home up to 200 nights per year on an accumulated, non-consecutive basis. Per diem payments and travel or lodging expense options are provided through agreements between IBEW Local 84 and Georgia Power Company.

The position is subject to call-out overtime, scheduled overtime, and storm restoration response. Candidates hired into Section 6A are required to fulfill a two-year obligation to Transmission Construction before becoming eligible to bid outside Section 6, Transmission Construction Organization.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a valid driver's license with the ability to attain a CDL within 6 months of employment
• Pass the Construction and Skilled Trades Exam (CAST test)
• Pass a Post Offer Evaluation Test and a thorough background check
• Successfully complete a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam and Worker's Compensation Medical Questionnaire
• Weight must be at or below 325 pounds fully dressed, including steel-toed work boots and hardhat

Preferred Experience

It is strongly preferred candidates have prior experience in the following:

• Transmission Substation Construction
• Mechanical Experience
• Industrial construction, maintenance, utility, electrical and/or military

It is a plus for candidates to have experience in the following:

• Working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting
• Emergency responders, commercial truck driving, tree trimming, or farming
• General math skills (Addition/Subtraction/Fractions)
• Basic hand and electrical tools
• Tape Measure knowledge
• Carpentry
• Labor-intensive occupations or physically demanding work environment
• Working with tools including but not limited to drills, circular saws, hydraulic presses, or other battery-powered hand tools
• Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, cranes, or heavy load rigging and lifting
• Transmission substation equipment and installation work to include bus fabrication, foundation installation, print reading and layout, switch installation, structure grounding, or other substation construction skills

Skills

• A basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background
• A basic knowledge of hand tools
• Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations
• Ability to take instruction, direction, and translate those into actions
• Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions

Pay

Current starting pay is $35.67 per hour and is non-negotiable. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84, which includes pay increases every six months until the maximum compensation rate is reached for the job classification.
