About the role

The AI Foundations team at Capital One is central to bringing our vision for AI to life. Our work spans the entire research lifecycle, from academic partnerships to production systems. We collaborate with product, technology, and business leaders to apply the latest in AI to our business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with a cross-functional team to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions.
  • Leverage a diverse stack of technologies including PyTorch, AWS UltraClusters, Huggingface, Lightning, and Vector Databases to analyze and interpret complex data.
  • Build and refine AI foundation models throughout the development process, from initial design to deployment.
  • Engage in cutting-edge research to advance AI capabilities and integrate them into innovative customer experiences.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to stakeholders, translating complex AI processes into actionable business goals.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience in Applied Research or a Master's degree in relevant fields with 4 years of experience in Applied Research.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and a strong track record of applying them to solve complex problems.
  • Experience with open-source tools and cloud computing platforms, particularly in deep learning and model optimization.
  • Track record of developing and deploying large-scale deep learning models, including those with 10 billion or more parameters.
  • Experience in areas such as model sparsification, quantization, and training optimization.
  • Publication history in top-tier conferences like ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR.
  • Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and influence strategic decisions.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of industrial NLP research experience or equivalent.
  • Experience with large-scale language model training and fine-tuning.
  • Deep understanding of transfer learning, model adaptation, and guidance techniques.
  • Experience with compiler design and optimization techniques for deep learning models.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Python, PyTorch, and other relevant programming languages.
  • Experience with distributed computing frameworks like Apache Spark and TensorFlow.
  • Knowledge of natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Pay

Salaries for this role vary by location, ranging from $262,500 to $326,800 annually. The exact salary will depend on your qualifications and the specific location where you will be working.
