About the role

The AI Foundations team at Capital One is central to bringing our vision for AI to life. We partner with academia and build production systems to apply the latest in AI to our business. In this role, you will:

  • Partner with a cross-functional team to deliver AI-powered products.
  • Leverage a broad stack of technologies to reveal insights in data.
  • Build AI foundation models through all phases of development.
  • Engage in high-impact applied research to push AI into new customer experiences.
  • Translate complex work into tangible business goals.

Responsibilities

You will work with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that change how customers interact with their money. You will:

  • Use a broad stack of technologies to reveal insights in data.
  • Build AI foundation models through all phases of development.
  • Engage in high-impact applied research to push AI into new customer experiences.
  • Translate complex work into tangible business goals.

Requirements

  • Own and pursue a research agenda, including choosing impactful research problems and carrying out long-running projects.

Qualifications

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields, with an exception that required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date plus 2 years of experience in Applied Research.
  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields plus 4 years of experience in Applied Research.
  • Preferred qualifications include:
    • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or related fields.
    • Multiple publications on topics related to the pre-training of large language models.
    • Experience with compiler design, optimization, and model compression.
    • Experience with transfer learning, model adaptation, and model guidance.

Skills

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Innovative and creative problem-solving skills.
  • A strong understanding of AI methodologies and open-source tools.
  • Experience with large-scale deep learning models and cloud computing platforms.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills to translate complex work into tangible business goals.
  • Technical proficiency in areas such as training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, RLHF, and model sparsification.

Pay

Salaries for this role range from $262,500 - $299,600 for Applied Researcher II positions in Cambridge, MA; $262,500 - $299,600 for Applied Researcher II positions in McLean, VA; $286,400 - $326,800 for Applied Researcher II positions in New York, NY; and $286,400 - $326,800 for Applied Researcher II positions in San Jose, CA. Actual salaries may vary based on factors such as location, experience, and performance.

Schedule

This role is full-time and permanent.
