Application Engineering Technical Lead - II

Vanguard is seeking a Technical Lead to join the Wealth Management superfamily of AWMT. This role focuses on critical enterprise initiatives, including greenfield projects like a new offer engagement tracking application used across Vanguard. Ideal candidates have full stack development skills, experience with AWS technologies, and a passion for system design and product development using Angular, NodeJS, and Python.

Responsibilities

• Drive technical design for team initiatives, translating product direction and architectural guidance into clear technical approaches.
• Stay deeply hands-on by contributing to design and implementation, reviewing code, and leading by example through strong engineering practices.
• Guide day-to-day technical decision-making, helping engineers navigate tradeoffs and resolve complex problems.
• Uphold high engineering standards for reliability, scalability, security, testing, and operational readiness.
• Mentor engineers through technical growth, providing coaching, feedback, and guidance to strengthen skills.
• Leverage cloud-first and AI-assisted engineering practices to improve code quality and accelerate delivery.
• Identify and address technical risks and impediments, partnering with architects or subject-matter experts as needed.
• Collaborate closely with the Engineering Manager and Product partners to align on technical direction and sequencing.
• Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement, encouraging experimentation and evolution of technical approaches.
• Contribute beyond the immediate team by participating in cross-team initiatives and special projects.

Requirements

• Full-stack development experience, with emphasis on user-facing platforms and service integration.
• 8+ years of software development experience, including 1+ year in a Technical Lead or equivalent leadership role.
• Strong experience designing and delivering production-grade software in cloud-based environments.
• Demonstrated technical leadership through hands-on contribution, mentoring, and technical guidance.
• A quality-first mindset, with experience building reliable, scalable, and observable systems.
• Comfort using AI-assisted engineering tools to improve developer productivity and code quality.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering managers, product partners, and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and GitHub-based workflows.
• Experience with frontend technologies (Angular/React, JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS, Jest).
• Proficiency in NodeJS and Python and/or Java development.
• Familiarity with DevOps concepts, tools, and continuous delivery pipelines (Git, GitHub).
• Familiarity with AWS technologies: CloudFront, S3, ECS, IAM, DynamoDB, Lambda, SNS, SQS.
