About the Role

The Application & Process Engineer will bridge client solution design, application engineering, process engineering, and field execution. This role transforms water quality data, client RFPs, and technical specifications into practical and scalable treatment solutions. The engineer supports equipment sizing, cost estimation, client presentations, proposal development, system startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and process optimization. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with commercial awareness, client-facing communication skills, and a willingness to work hands-on in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze raw water quality data, RFPs, and technical specifications to develop customized water and wastewater treatment solutions.
  • Select and size filtration equipment, treatment media, pumps, instrumentation, and related system components.
  • Prepare capital and operational cost estimates to support proposals and business development activities.
  • Partner with Business Development teams during client visits and technical discussions.
  • Present engineering solutions and explain technical recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
  • Identify and evaluate technical, operational, regulatory, profitability, and safety risks before bid submission.
  • Support proposal development and technical writing.
  • Develop and maintain Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and general layout drawings.
  • Apply water treatment process principles, fluid dynamics, and mass balance concepts to engineering designs.
  • Support system mobilization, startup, and commissioning at client sites.
  • Provide hands-on technical troubleshooting during system startup and operation.
  • Analyze operational data to improve system throughput, operating costs, and treatment performance.
  • Support optimization efforts to consistently achieve environmental discharge requirements.
  • Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable environmental standards and client EHS requirements.
  • Apply relevant requirements from agencies such as NJDEP and NYDEC.
  • Participate in HAZOP reviews and technical risk assessments.
  • Promote safe engineering practices during design, field installation, startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Maintain required safety certifications and comply with applicable site requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
  • 4–7 years of combined experience in water/wastewater process engineering, technical sales support, cost estimation, or field commissioning.
  • Strong understanding of physical and chemical water treatment processes.
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics and mass balance principles.
  • Hands-on experience creating and reviewing P&IDs and mechanical layouts.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Strong proposal writing and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to translate complex engineering concepts into clear business value for clients.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineering, sales, fabrication, operations, and client teams.
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification or willingness to obtain it upon hire.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15–30% for site visits, system startups, and commissioning activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with regional environmental regulations and standards, including NJDEP and NYDEC requirements.
  • FE/EIT certification.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Experience with water treatment system commissioning and field troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting technical sales, proposals, and client presentations.
  • Experience with environmental remediation and wastewater treatment applications.
  • Experience conducting or participating in HAZOP reviews.
  • Strong understanding of treatment equipment selection and process optimization.
