Application Development Lead (Adobe Commerce / Magento 2)

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a distributed team of Business Analysts, Adobe Commerce developers, QA professionals, and technical contributors across multiple regions.
  • Conduct performance reviews, career development planning, capacity management, and regular one-on-one meetings.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, code quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage team coverage, support rotations, and cross-regional handoffs.
  • Partner with recruiting and HR to hire, onboard, and retain top technical talent.
  • Own the architecture, scalability, security, and reliability of the Adobe Commerce platform, including custom development, integrations, and storefront enhancements.
  • Establish coding standards and best practices for PHP, MySQL, and Magento development.
  • Lead technical design reviews, create technical specifications, and evaluate build-versus-buy solutions.
  • Drive platform upgrades, security initiatives, performance optimization, and system reliability improvements.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues involving databases, integrations, caching, indexing, and application performance.
  • Lead Agile delivery processes, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, standups, and retrospectives using Jira.
  • Collaborate with product and business teams to define requirements, user stories, and project estimates.
  • Manage sprint commitments, monitor team velocity, identify risks, and remove delivery obstacles.
  • Oversee release management processes, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment best practices.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison for cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Support eCommerce processes including catalog management, pricing, promotions, checkout, payments, order management, shipping, returns, and tax integrations.
  • Align engineering priorities with key business metrics such as conversion rates, performance, uptime, and customer experience.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of software development experience, including 3+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Adobe Commerce (Magento 2).
  • Deep expertise in PHP, object-oriented programming, and software design principles.
  • Advanced MySQL experience, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, and performance tuning.
  • Experience managing Agile/Scrum development teams using Jira.
  • Strong understanding of eCommerce systems, including payments, shipping, inventory, promotions, tax, and customer data management.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Git, Composer, and Docker.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience collaborating across multiple time zones.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Adobe Commerce certification.
  • Experience with Adobe Commerce Cloud and GraphQL APIs.
  • Integration experience with ERP, OMS, PIM, CRM, tax, and payment platforms.
  • Background supporting high-volume B2B or B2C eCommerce environments.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, Fastly, Elasticsearch, or OpenSearch.
  • Proven success managing offshore or globally distributed development teams.
  • Experience operating in organizations utilizing structured asynchronous communication practices.
