Appellate Criminal Defense Attorney (23327)

About the role

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide professional legal services for the Law Offices of the Public Defender, focusing on juvenile and adult indigent clients in areas such as litigation, appeals, counseling, research, and analysis.

Responsibilities

• Provide representation in all misdemeanor, felony, and juvenile cases with some supervision and mentorship.
• Analyze probable outcomes of cases based on the appellate record and conduct extensive legal research.
• Advise clients on post-conviction options and remedies.
• Consult with clients and trial counsel, review the record, and litigate errors made in lower courts.
• Prepare and present arguments in written pleadings and occasionally during oral arguments before the New Mexico Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

Requirements

• Current license as an attorney issued by the New Mexico Supreme Court or eligible for a limited license.
• One (1) year of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Familiarity with the New Mexico Constitution and Criminal Code.
• Experience in criminal litigation.

Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Eligible to work with the Law Offices of the Public Defender in the U.S.

Pay

• Starting pay range: $32.7093/hour ($68,035.34 annually)
• Maximum pay range: $52.49/hour ($109,179.20 annually)
