Role Description
The Appellate Court Research Attorney is a full-time, on-site role located in Taylorville, IL. This position focuses on researching complex legal issues arising in appellate matters, analyzing statutes and case law, and preparing objective, well-organized legal memoranda for judicial review. The Research Attorney drafts and edits written materials, including bench memoranda and recommendations, and may assist with reviewing pleadings and appellate records. Daily work includes identifying relevant authorities, tracking developments in Illinois and federal law, and collaborating with judges and court staff to support consistent and well-reasoned decisions. The role also involves maintaining accurate research files, meeting deadlines, and upholding strict standards of confidentiality and professional ethics.
Qualifications
- Strong legal analysis skills with experience addressing complex legal issues and applying relevant law to varied fact patterns.
- Demonstrated research skills in statutes, case law, court rules, and secondary sources, including electronic legal research platforms.
- Knowledge of appellate courts and procedures, including familiarity with Illinois courts and judicial processes.
- Advanced legal writing skills for drafting memoranda, opinions, and other court-related documents, with attention to clarity and organization.
- Experience reviewing pleadings and appellate records for legal sufficiency, procedural compliance, and issue identification.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and license (or eligibility for licensure) to practice law in Illinois.
- Excellent critical thinking, detail orientation, and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple matters simultaneously.
