About the role
The Appeals, Writs, and Trials section of the Criminal Division is seeking candidates to fill multiple vacancies in our Sacramento and Fresno offices. AWT is looking both for appellate attorneys and trial prosecutors to represent the People of the State of California.
Responsibilities
- Appellate Deputy Attorneys General (DAG) appear on behalf of the People in felony criminal appeals and related writs before the state courts of appeal and the California Supreme Court, including those in death penalty cases.
- Occasionally handle federal habeas corpus litigation.
- Complete work within narrow time frames, requiring strong time management skills.
- Write strong legal briefs as a central part of the section's work.
- Trial Deputy Attorneys General investigate and prosecute felony and misdemeanor cases when the local prosecutorial agency is recused.
- Handle pretrial appearances in person and sometimes remotely, and trials may require travel and overnight stays.
- Review charging decisions by counties and consult with local prosecuting agencies on cases and issues.
- Work with a variety of state and local law enforcement agencies, advising and overseeing investigations.
- Work remotely, subject to operational needs, and new hires are encouraged to work in the office two days per week as they get up to speed on the work we do.
Qualifications
- Felony trial experience is required.
- Good writing skills for preparing internal reports or filing detailed written pleadings on complex issues.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
