About the role

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellow develops clinical competency in emergency medicine through structured training, hands-on patient care, and participation in educational and simulation-based learning. The APPF demonstrates knowledge and competency of core skills related to family and rural health medicine that serves as a basis for continued growth and progression of skills and pace.

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellow (APPF) serves as a member of a collaborative health team made up of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, technicians, and various support personnel. Under general physician supervision, provides quality service in a caring and professional manner, actively supporting team efforts to ensure cost effectiveness and service excellence.

The APPF role is applicable for a 12-month period and includes responsibility for identifying the patient's health and medical status through taking health histories, performing physical examinations, initiating screening and diagnostic procedures, managing minor trauma and acute health problems, health maintenance, and clinical management of stable chronically ill patients.

Responsibilities

• Participates in a 12-month intense training program in family and rural health medicine consisting of patient care in a Level 1 Trauma Center, simulation lab training, off-service rotations, and rotations to community hospitals, emergency departments, rural health sites outside of Roanoke, family medicine clinics, and urgent care clinics.
• Attends Family Medicine grand rounds and lectures, develops beginner and advanced skills in suturing, wound care, incision and drainage (I&D), and foreign body removal.
• Becomes proficient in basic radiological diagnostic abilities.
• Conducts necessary steps to obtain comprehensive health history.
• Performs basic physical, psychological, and developmental assessments using the techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, percussion, and palpation.
• Discriminates between normal and abnormal physical, psychological, and developmental findings and appropriately determines when to consult and/or refer the patient to other members of the health care team.
• Assesses, diagnoses, and manages selected acute and chronic illnesses and conditions.
• Performs or requests laboratory/radiology procedures and/or other screening tests based on age, health history, and health assessment.
• Performs splinting, suturing, and incision and drainage as appropriate.
• Analyzes and interprets health data, initiating and implementing appropriate treatment plans using established protocols or physician consultation.
• Administers medications and injections as needed.
• Utilizes automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
• Accurately records assessment findings and documents all actions taken in response to these findings in a clear and concise manner.
• Documents patient information, including treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, and patient concerns in the medical records in a timely manner.
• Coordinates necessary appointments and referrals, including the use of community resources, as the patient's health status dictates.
• Consults with physicians as appropriate, keeping them informed of needs and problems related to patient care.
• Identifies and provides patient/family education needs in a timely manner.
• Teaches, discusses, and plans with patient and family for continued health management.
• Promotes wellness through health education.
• Acts as a clinical and professional resource to patients, other health team members, the community, and various academic institutions.
• Maintains patient flow, seeing patients in appropriate order and keeps exam rooms filled.
• Rotates to rural emergency departments, family medicine, and urgent care settings as well as off-service rotations as prescribed by program curriculum.
• By the end of the fellowship, manages 16 patients per day in the family medicine setting.
• Consistently delivers the best in customer service and patient care, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and other employees.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program or Nurse Practitioner Program.
• Current Physician Assistant or Family Nurse Practitioner license required.
• Virginia Medical License required prior to the beginning of the fellowship.
• DEA licensure required.
• AHA BLS, ACLS certification required.
• PALS required within 6 months of Fellowship training.
• Must be able to care for patients of all age ranges.
• Meets credentialing requirements and qualifies for malpractice insurance accepted by Carilion Clinic’s malpractice insurance carrier.
• Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers.
• Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients, and their family members.

• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Computer literacy, including experience with electronic medical records and other automated systems.

Pay

$68,640.00 per year. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
