APP ( NP or PA) - Cardiothoracic Surgery
About the Role
We are excited to offer an exceptional opportunity to join our Cardiothoracic Surgery Critical Care Team as a Physician Assistant / Associate (PA) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP / AGACNP / ACNP-AG). This role is ideal for an advanced practitioner seeking a highly autonomous, clinically challenging, and collaborative team environment in a high-acuity, cutting-edge setting. You will work alongside experienced cardiothoracic surgeons, APPs, and multidisciplinary professionals, playing an integral role in comprehensive perioperative care across the full continuum—from initial consultation through postoperative recovery and discharge.
Responsibilities
- Critical Care Management: Manage patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic surgeries, including:
- Aortic surgery
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- Thoracic surgery
- Valve surgery
- Mechanical Circulatory Support
- Collaboration: Partner closely with attending physicians and APP colleagues in the management of advanced mechanical circulatory support devices, including:
- ECMO
- Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABPs)
- Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs)
- Impella
- Right Ventricular Assist Devices (RVADs)
- Procedural Skills Development: Perform and refine common ICU procedures, including:
- Bronchoscopy
- Central venous catheter placement
- Arterial line insertion
- Chest tube management
- Patient Experience & Quality of Care: Focus on optimizing patient experience, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes by delivering high-quality, evidence-based perioperative care.
- Diagnostic & Clinical Decision-Making: Order and interpret relevant diagnostic studies and apply clinical judgment to guide timely and appropriate interventions.
- Emergency Response: Respond to critical and emergent situations, providing rapid assessment and stabilization until definitive treatment is implemented.
Requirements
- Education: Graduate of an Accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- Licensure/Certification:
- Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) and RN licensure or Physician Assistant (PA) licensure.
- DEA license.
- AHA BLS-HCP certification required.
- Advanced Life Support certification preferred.
- Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
- Other:
- Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Computer literacy required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
- Comfortable practicing with a high level of autonomy in a fast-paced ICU setting.
- Strong interest or background in cardiothoracic surgery and/or critical care.
- Committed to teamwork, clinical excellence, and continuous professional growth.
Pay
Compensation Range: $107,993.60 - $172,785.60. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
Schedule
Full-time position with day, evening, and night shifts available.
