APP Fellow (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) - Hematology Oncology

This one-year fellowship focuses on clinical experiences as well as a robust didactic curriculum, intended to fully prepare an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for a full-time position in Hematology Oncology. Ideal candidates are new APPs or those wishing to change specialties.

About the Role

The APP Fellow will be exposed to a wide array of disease processes in multiple settings with monthly rotations in Malignant Hematology, Oncology, Bone and Marrow Transplant, Classical Hematology, Infusion, as well as elective rotation opportunities. Fellows will learn and complete competencies on procedures such as bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures, participate in weekly lectures including grand rounds, and complete an end-of-year project. Support is provided by APPs in each department, APP mentors, physician fellows, and physician leaders.

This fellowship cohort is scheduled to start February 22nd, 2027, running through January 2027. The schedule aligns with other department APPs but may include additional clinical and academic requirements as determined by the APP Fellowship Director.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care through comprehensive history-taking and physical examinations.
• Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results.
• Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief.
• Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and consults with the attending or collaborating physician.
• Documents and bills for direct care provided.
• Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
• Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
• Participates in accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
• Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
• Attends education and academic sessions as determined by the APP Fellowship Coordinator or Director.
• Completes presentations, lectures, QI projects, or other academic requirements as set by the MUSC APP Fellowship Director or Department.
• Participates in required MUSC APP Fellowship activities.
• Maintains licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc., as required by applicable policies and state law.
• Participates in weekly tumor boards and team meetings.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant, or
• Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN in one of the following:
  • AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP): Adult patients (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management, or primary care setting.
  • FNP (Family NP): Patients from birth to death, stable chronic disease state management, or primary care across the lifespan.
• Preferred APRN Training: AGACNP/ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) for adult patients (13 years to death) who are acutely ill, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent.
• No prior experience required, as this fellowship is geared toward new graduates and APPs changing practice specialties.
• All certifications (e.g., Basic Life Support) must be current and complete prior to the start date.
• DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day, if applicable.

Qualifications

An APRN or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician, the APP Manager, and the APP Fellowship Director.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions.
• Full use of both hands and legs, good finger dexterity, and ability to perform repetitive motions.
• Qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
• Maintain 20/40 vision corrected; ability to see and recognize objects at close and far distances.
• Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted; exert up to 50 lbs of force; lift from 36" to overhead up to 25 lbs.
• Infrequent work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

Patient Population

Focus on patients at Hollings Cancer Center, with an age range from 13 years to death.
