About the role

The Apheresis Technician II (Phlebotomist) is responsible for determining the suitability of whole blood and apheresis blood component donors and patients, collecting and processing blood components and therapeutic products, and maintaining patient and donor privacy.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and donors in reception and donor rooms, assisting with registration and appointment scheduling.
  • Determines and assists in completing patient paperwork, ensuring all information is accurate and confidential.
  • Registers donors in BCIS and eDonor when necessary.
  • Collects and processes blood components and therapeutic products from suitable donors and patients using automated and non-automated procedures.
  • Maintains quality control procedures and corrects instrument malfunctions under the direction of a Therapeutic Apheresis RN.
  • Performs therapeutic apheresis procedures and HPC collections, ensuring patient and donor safety.
  • Documents procedures and data accurately and promptly.
  • Educates donors about multiple component donations and converts them to multiple product donations.
  • Schedules donors for their next appointment using eDonor.
  • Monitors patients and donors for any unstable situations or reactions, administering appropriate care as needed.
  • Prepares components from whole blood and apheresis procedures according to Blood Services protocols.
  • Ensures proper storage and documentation of blood components.
  • Communicates effectively with potential donors and schedules them for blood donations.
  • Assists with inventory responsibilities, receiving and verifying incoming supplies.
  • Supports the environment of care by adhering to safety and infection control policies, wearing appropriate protective equipment, and disposing of biohazard waste properly.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and current CPR certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years general and/or blood donor phlebotomy experience.
  • PREFERRED: Phlebotomy and/or IV certification, national laboratory certification, apheresis and/or automated medical instrumentation procedural expertise, background in patient care and/or whole blood separation techniques.

Skills

  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, and pushing equipment.
  • Manual dexterity for donation procedures and component processing.
  • Good hearing and speaking for communication responsibilities.

Pay and Schedule

The pay range for this position is $22.55 - $27.06 per hour.
