About the role

The Tax & Permit Specialist I is an entry-level position responsible for managing and processing tax and permit applications, ensuring compliance with local and state regulations. This role requires attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a thorough understanding of tax laws and regulations. It involves working closely with various departments and external stakeholders to facilitate the issuance of tax certificates and/or permits and the collection of taxes. This is a non-supervisory position that operates under general supervision, with responsibility for completing assigned tasks independently or collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies the accuracy of submitted documents and ensures compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Responds to inquiries from taxpayers regarding tax and permit requirements, procedures, and obligations.
  • Maintains accurate records of all transactions and communications.
  • Collaborates with other City departments to ensure consistent enforcement of tax and permit laws and regulations.
  • Stays informed about changes in tax and permit laws, regulations, and policies that may affect tax and permit administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or public administration, or a closely related field (additional years of experience may substitute for the degree on an exceptional basis, with a minimum of six (6) years of professional related experience in processing tax and permitting).
  • Two (2) years of experience in processing tax and permitting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex regulations clearly and professionally.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.

Skills

  • Knowledge of all requirements to process and administer various tax and permit applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal tax regulations.
  • Aptitude to deal with confidential matters tactfully and with good judgment.
  • Analytical skills to research, report, and troubleshoot issues and process inefficiencies.
  • Ability to follow direction and work independently.
  • Attention to detail, particularly in municipal tax calculations and reporting.
  • Regulatory knowledge to stay abreast of changes in municipal tax laws and regulations.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify issues and implement solutions.
  • Customer focus to provide excellent service to businesses and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) or more years of tax and permitting experience in municipal government.
  • Experience in municipal government.

Work Environment

  • Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Pay

$40,945.05 annually
