About the role

The AOT Fleet Service Technician is responsible for mechanical and electronic service work on automobiles, heavy trucks, construction equipment, snowplow and spreader systems utilized by the Agency of Transportation (VTrans). Candidates should have diagnostic and research skills, in addition to the ability to plan and schedule work while setting priorities and responding to unanticipated service needs. The ability to remain self-motivated and work independently is required to be successful in this position.

Responsibilities

- Perform mechanical and electronic service work on various vehicles and equipment. - Diagnose and repair issues using diagnostic tools and research techniques. - Plan and schedule work, setting priorities and addressing unexpected service needs. - Maintain physical fitness to handle the demands of the job, including lifting and working in harsh conditions. - Participate in a random drug and alcohol testing program once a Commercial Learner’s permit is obtained. - Be available for overtime work as needed.

Requirements

- High School diploma or equivalent. - Three (3) years or more of experience in the maintenance and service of light, medium, and/or heavy duty vehicles and equipment, including experience in the installation and service of vehicle and equipment related electronic components. - One (1) year or more as a Fleet Technician II. - Valid Driver’s License. - Obtain a Commercial Learner’s permit within 60 days of employment. - Obtain a Vermont State Inspection Mechanic Certification within 60 days of employment. - Obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License, with air-brake certification and tanker endorsement, within six (6) months of employment. - Provide own hand-tools.

- Self-motivated and able to work independently. - Physical ability to use tools and lift parts and materials common to working on heavy vehicles and equipment. - Exposure to blood or airborne pathogens. - Ability to remain self-motivated and work independently.

Pay

- Starting salary may be negotiable based on experience and qualifications. - As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 22 will be $26.50 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $41.37 per hour.

Schedule

- Overtime work may be required.
