Anu Talus elected new Chair of the European Data Protection Board
About the role
Anu Talus has been elected as the new Chair of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), succeeding Andrea Jelinek. She will combine this role with her position as head of the Finnish Data Protection Authority (DPA). The Chair oversees all tasks of the Board, ensures their timely performance, and represents the Board.
Election details
- Elected with 19 votes out of 27, in two rounds
- Term of office: five years, renewable once
- Elected by simple majority through secret ballot among members, per Art. 73 GDPR
Responsibilities
- Oversee all tasks of the EDPB and ensure their timely performance
- Represent the Board
- Provide instructions to the EDPB Secretariat
- Ensure coherence between GDPR and newly adopted EU digital legislation
- Safeguard the competences of the EDPB and avoid fragmentation

- EDPB Deputy Chair Aleid Wolfsen (NL) was elected on 15 May 2019; his term will normally end on 15 May 2024
About the EDPB
The European Data Protection Board is an independent European body that contributes to the consistent application of data protection rules throughout the European Union and promotes cooperation between the EU's data protection authorities. It is established by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The EDPB is supported by the EDPB Secretariat, which provides analytical, administrative, and logistical support to the Board, organises all Board meetings, manages IT platforms used by DPAs to cooperate, and supplies legal analysis.
