About the Role
To work under the direction of a certificated staff member to support and assist in providing instructional programs and services to students.
Responsibilities
- Monitors student's progress during regular or special class performance and group work, prompting, assisting, or redirecting as directed by a teacher.
- Provides one-on-one or group review of material taught by certificated staff, as assigned.
- Assists with classroom management.
- Reinforces special strategies for learning materials and skills based on individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
- Assists students in curriculum tasks, guiding, helping, and reinforcing instruction, and providing assistance during testing as outlined in the student's IEP.
- Maintains ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
- Assembles and adapts instructional materials as needed per individual student needs (e.g., enlarging, modifying, color-coding) in accordance with IEPs.
- Monitors and assists with student use of instructional equipment, including general maintenance and cleaning.
- Reports malfunctioning equipment to the classroom teacher.
- Interacts and communicates with staff, faculty, students, administration, and parents as directed.
- Accompanies students on field trips and community-based instruction activities.
- Attends required training and completes 20 hours per school year of staff development activities.
- Provides accommodations as outlined in each student's IEP.
- Assists with daily organizational needs, including monitoring assignment books and gathering homework materials.
- Collects and reports data related to behavior support plans and health issues as directed.
- Serves as a liaison between general and special education classrooms.
- Collects data and maintains daily communication logs as directed.
- Maintains a safe working environment.
- Participates in in-service training programs as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with school policy, administrative regulations, and state/federal laws.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus completion of a paraprofessional training program.
- Paraprofessional Certification plus 20 hours of additional training annually; Associate's Degree preferred.
- 1-2 years of successful experience with students with special needs in an educational setting.
- Must have an Associate's Degree or higher, or be willing to obtain Pennsylvania Paraprofessional certification within 3 months.
- Clearances required for outside candidates.
