Responsibilities
- Assists in the supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities.
- Provides security functions within the school such as monitoring corridors and reviewing student identification cards.
- Assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments.
- Aids in preparing bulletin boards and displaying students' work in classrooms.
- Operates photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials; and operates audiovisual equipment.
- Maintains the orderly arrangement of classroom.
- Greets and directs visitors to appropriate areas of the school, consults with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
- Provides tutoring services to students under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Aids in collecting and grading students’ homework assignments and examination materials under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Aids in supervising the loading and unloading of students on school busses.
- Aids in the receipt, processing, and issuance of new books under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Collects daily classroom absentee reports and contacts parents and guardians to verify causes of student absences; may assist elementary School teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary.
- May assist in the Supervision of the school procedure to sell public transportation passes to students.
- Additional job responsibilities which support schools during the COVID-19 pandemic include:
- Communicate with families of quarantined students, with a focus on helping ensure students and families know what to expect and how to access instruction;
- Assist students and families with securing devices if needed, as well as accessing necessary online programs to receive instruction, and troubleshoot technology issues in coordination with appropriate school and district resources;
- Coordinate logistical details of remote instruction for quarantined students, including educator schedules, Google Meets setup, and other needs;
- As needed, provide supervision of in-person student learning while a teacher is teaching remotely when absent for COVID-related reasons;
- Coordinate student COVID testing logistics at school, including but not limited:
- Assist with scheduling test administration;
- Supervise students waiting for tests;
- Provide class coverage during staff testing;
- Promote testing consents to families;
- Promote student and family vaccination opportunities at school:
- Assist with parent reminders/notifications,
- Assist with onsite mobile vaccination events,
- Remind families of second dose appointments.
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school (or G.E.D. equivalent) supplemented by six months experience in an educational setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Good knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling, basic knowledge of mathematics, knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.
- Ability to work with and for school-aged children, ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment, ability to communicate effectively with the public.
- Good oral and written communication skills, 800 reading skills, skill in operating audio-visual equipment and personal computers is highly desirable.
Conditions of Employment
- Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
- Be Fully Vaccinated Employees are required to be fully vaccinated within 30 days of their hire date. Full vaccination is defined as at least two weeks after your second shot of a two-shot vaccination course, or at least two weeks after a one-shot vaccination course.
