ANIMAL ENFORCEMENT OFFICER TRAINEE

Division: BARC • Reporting Location: 2700 Evalla

Schedule

• Sunday–Wednesday: 07:00 AM–05:30 PM (subject to change)

Responsibilities

• Performs routine support functions in the enforcement of animal control through communications, dispatch, and case documentation to acquire knowledge of animal control operations (codes, computer systems, ordinances, and regulations).
• Under supervision, plans routes, drives to destinations, performs work necessary to the circumstances encountered, and completes required paperwork on assigned calls.
• Assists in apprehending and impounding stray, diseased, and/or dangerous animals.
• Loads and unloads animals from trucks; counts, sorts, and separates them by size and sex prior to placement in kennels or wards.
• Under supervision, issues citations to animal owners in violation of City Ordinances.
• Explains City Ordinances and responsibilities of pet ownership to the public as necessary.
• Assists the public with identification of their animals at the impound facility.
• Logs and maintains related files; prepares reports.
• Maintains proper records on animals apprehended or turned in by citizens.
• Checks and services vehicles; reports maintenance needs.

Working Conditions

• Extensive, near-continuous physical exertion, including repeated lifting of very heavy objects (over 80 pounds), deep bending, climbing steps, and/or assuming awkward positions.
• Work in indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
• Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, risks from contagious diseases, or physical trauma conditions of short-term to intermediate-term nature.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• No prior experience required.
• Must obtain State of Texas Animal Control Certification within nine months of employment.
• Valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s driving policy.

Preferences

• Preference given to candidates with experience in animal shelter operations and knowledge of local, state, and national animal laws and best practices.
• Preference given to candidates who can establish and maintain professional, effective relationships with animal shelters, community partners, other governmental organizations, and the community.
• Preference given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for the position and are among the most qualified candidates.

Pay

Pay Grade: 12

This position is subject to random drug testing and, if promotional, requires passing an assignment drug test.
