Animal Control Officer

About the role

The City of Farmington is seeking an Animal Control Officer to enforce City Animal Control and Park Ranger ordinances, patrol streets and parks, respond to complaints, and remove dangerous animals.

Responsibilities

• Enforce City Animal Control and Park Ranger ordinances
• Capture and transport stray animals to an animal shelter
• Patrol City parks for vandalism and enforce ordinances
• Respond to complaints about animal issues or violations
• Remove dead, injured, or dangerous animals from streets and residential premises
• Work an assigned shift using own judgment in handling difficult and emergency situations
• Provide customer service and establish working relationships with the public
• Perform various tasks such as assisting officers with vehicle tows, traffic control, and investigating accidents
• Inspect business licenses and food vendors for state and local licenses
• Renew trespass authority within the City
• Perform green tagging of illegal vehicle sales

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record
• Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing
• Excellent public relations skills
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Ability to lift up to fifty pounds to load animals into truck
• Knowledge of and concern for animals
• Previous experience as a veterinarian assistant and/or security guard or law enforcement experience preferred
• Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays
• Subject to on-call and rotating shifts
• Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public
• Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
• Ability to meet special requirements, including learning the City's geography

Qualifications

• Passes extensive background check
• Passes pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol tests
