About the Role

The Animal Services Department is seeking an Animal Caretaker to join our team. Our mission is to create a PAWsitive impact by enriching the lives of animals and people. We care for thousands of domestic and wildlife animals annually, working to reunite them with their owners, rehome them, or transfer them to rescue and rehabilitation organizations. We also assist the public with animal-related concerns. As part of TeamRC, you'll work in a fast-paced environment with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers committed to protecting and serving our community's animals and people.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect animal housing areas.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks such as laundry and dishes.
  • Assist with meet-and-greets and adoptions.
  • Support enrichment and behavior programs.
  • Assist the public with animal-related questions.
  • Answer phone calls and assist with administrative tasks like updating records, cashier services, and processing licenses.
  • Help customers select and adopt pets.
  • Communicate medical and behavior needs of animals to potential adopters.
  • Safely handle various breeds and species of animals.
  • Participate in animal enrichment and socialization programs.
  • Maintain animal and supply inventories.
  • Assist with euthanasia.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Six months of recent experience working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, clinical setting, or animal services facility is desirable.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C or Class 3 California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Skills

  • Knowledge of various breeds of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals.
  • Understanding of basic animal behavior and care techniques.
  • Proficiency in customer service and communication.
  • Ability to perform kennel cleaning and facility maintenance.
  • Skill in record keeping and safe work practices.
  • Competence in operating cleaning equipment, vehicles, and office tools.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and efficiently.
  • Understanding of rules and regulations governing animal impounding and release.
  • Capacity to work independently and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with the public and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and on-call.
  • Pass a reference and background verification.
  • Provide proof of a valid California driver's license and be insurable.
  • Pass a pre-employment medical exam.
  • Complete a verification form for employment eligibility in the U.S.
