Animal Care Trainee - Atlanta Campus

About the Role

The Division of Animal Resources within the Emory National Biomedical Research Center at Emory University is seeking a full-time Animal Care Trainee to join the dedicated Animal Care team. This role assists with husbandry and daily operations related to non-human primates (NHP), ensuring the highest quality of animal care, clinical and research support. The ideal candidate is motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, and passionate about research with compassion for both animals and people. This position is essential and requires weekend and holiday work as part of a rotating schedule.

Responsibilities

• Operate cage washers and ensure equipment is in proper working order.
• Assist in the collection of blood, urine, and feces from animals for medical research.
• Perform daily husbandry tasks, including maintaining cleanliness of the animal housing facility and ensuring adequate supplies of food, bedding materials, PPE, and other necessary items.
• Maintain inventory of necessary supplies and equipment, and assist with minor repairs in the animal housing facility.
• Collaborate with other technicians and rotate through all ENBRC DAR facilities as scheduled by the Assistant Operations Manager.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers, management, research staff, and other support services to ensure high-quality laboratory animal care and research support.
• Follow established guidelines for the proper care and welfare of animals, adhering to AAALAC standards.
• Work in an indoor/outdoor environment, potentially in inclement weather, and handle exposure to biohazards and potentially dangerous animals.
• Lift up to 75 pounds, move/push heavy racks, and perform tasks requiring bending, kneeling, or squatting.

Requirements

• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
• Valid Georgia driver’s license and insurable driving record (if required by the position).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in an animal research environment, particularly with non-human primates (NHP).
• Familiarity with animal observations, husbandry, and cage wash processes.
• Understanding of humane care and welfare guidelines for laboratory animals (AAALAC).
• Working knowledge of hygiene principles, safety protocols, and basic animal husbandry.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to follow written and oral instructions in English.
• Certifications from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
• Experience working in a biosafety environment.
• Proficiency in computer skills.

Schedule

7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with alternating weekends and holidays.
