Animal Care Specialist - Wildlife Response

Essential Duties

• Specialist 1:
  • Provides care for animals admitted into rehabilitation.
    • Care and husbandry of animals in rehabilitation, quarantine, and other areas.
    • Coordination with Wildlife Response Curator and veterinary staff.
    • Routine animal husbandry duties: diet preparation, feeding, cleaning, disinfection, and record maintenance.
    • Basic medical treatments and assisting in medical procedures.
    • Data collection and reporting.
    • Monitoring animal behavior, health, and progress.
    • Presentation preparation and VIP tour leading.
    • On-call duty participation.
    • HAZWOPER 24 certification and Oil Spill Response Team membership.
    • Operant conditioning learning.
    • Other duties as assigned.
• Specialist 2:
  • Assists with medical procedures.
  • Develops and supervises animal care and treatment plans.
  • Mentors interns and supports their progression.
  • Leads animal pickups and releases.
  • Prepares and transports non-releasable animals to permanent placement.
  • Uses operant conditioning principles.

Other Skills and Abilities

• Ability to remain organized, self-motivated, independent, and attentive to cleanliness and wildlife safety.
• Willingness to work holidays, weekends, and overnights.
• Comfortable with social media and potential filming/interviewing.

Physical Requirements

• Standing, moving, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, handling tools, equipment, and materials.
• The ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Salary Range

• $20.35-$25.03(1)
• $23.65-$29.15(2)
