About the Role
Island Health has an opportunity for a full-time Anesthesiologist to join a team of five colleagues in a busy anesthesia practice at the Cowichan District Hospital. The role supports expanding surgical demand and prepares for the occupation of the new hospital in 2027. The anticipated need for Anesthesiology will grow to 8 FTE upon transfer to the new facility.
Members are affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program and provide teaching to medical students and residents.
About the Facility
The Cowichan District Hospital is a 134-bed acute care facility with an exceptionally collegial atmosphere among general and specialty medical staff. Local services include:
- Full-service family practices and inpatient care provided by local FPs
- Maternity primary care delivered by the Cowichan Maternity Clinic and a dedicated group of midwives
- Specialist services: Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Radiology
- Surgical services: General and Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Plastic Surgery
- A busy ER served by dedicated ER physicians
The new Cowichan District Hospital, expected to open in 2027, will feature over 200 inpatient beds, expanded OR and ICU capacity, and state-of-the-art equipment and design.
Benefits and Incentives
- Eligibility for additional remuneration under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:
- Retention Premium: 4.20%
- Retention Flat Fee: $6,509
- Relocation Funding: up to $15,000 (amount based on location relocating from)
- Recruitment Incentive: $10,000 (full-time)
