Anesthesiologist (Physician)

Primary provider of anesthesia care, collaborating with surgeons and CRNAs to deliver anesthesia and sedation for surgical procedures. Ensures pre-anesthetic and post-anesthetic evaluations are complete and any abnormalities are reported to the surgeon. Maintains a safe environment with appropriate equipment, medication, and processes to ensure high-quality patient care.

About the role

Administer sedation, general anesthesia, and regional blocks in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting for a variety of surgical procedures, including General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, ENT, Podiatry, Urology, Dentistry, and Ophthalmology. Position is located at the ambulatory surgery center associated with the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center, operated by the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC). Adhere to the TCC Cheghwtsen model of service, providing timely and effective care while interacting with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion, and empathy.

Responsibilities

• Perform pre-anesthesia evaluations and order appropriate pre-anesthetic medications.
• Plan anesthetic management, including selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
• Be available for consultation by surgical staff regarding patient care.
• Consult with and supervise Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) regarding patient care and departmental policies.
• Document discussion of the anesthesia plan and risks with patients.
• Administer anesthesia for surgical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures.
• Provide airway management and place/manage regional anesthetic blocks.
• Maintain anesthesia at required levels throughout procedures.
• Ensure all emergency equipment is in proper working order and utilize appropriate monitoring equipment.
• Recognize and take corrective action for abnormal patient responses to anesthetic agents or adjunctive medications.
• Provide professional observations and resuscitative care until the patient regains control of vital functions.
• Perform post-anesthetic evaluations and consult with surgeons concerning any abnormal conditions.
• Ensure compliance with all IHS and AAAHC standards associated with anesthesia services.
• Serve as Anesthesia Section Lead (one of the anesthesiologists), including supervision of other anesthesiologists, creation of and adherence to departmental policies, and participation in quality control processes.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school (MD or DO).
• Successful completion of a residency in Anesthesiology.
• Maintain appropriate Board certification with the American Board of Anesthesiology.
• Participation in a program of maintenance of certification.
• Must meet all guidelines for credentialing and privileging as a member of the TCC Clinical Staff.
• Currently licensed (or qualified to pursue licensure) as a physician in the state of Alaska.
• Knowledge of a range of surgical procedures to anticipate surgeon needs, including safe patient positioning.
• Ability to provide general and regional anesthesia as well as surgical nerve blocks.
• Recent relevant experience and acceptable malpractice history.
• Current ACLS and PALS certification.
• Current DEA registration certificate for prescribing authority.
• Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Physical demands

Work is primarily at Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center. Position requires recurring bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and reaching. Work is performed in a facility treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems, including those with communicable diseases.
