Anesthesia Technician (ANML HEALTH TCHN 3 VMTH)
About the role
Independent of direct supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis. Provide anesthesia technical support, create anesthesia protocols, induce, monitor, maintain and recover anesthetized animals, conduct anesthetic monitoring and record keeping, and promptly communicate peri-anesthesia concerns or problems to the veterinarian supervising anesthesia. Provide a broad spectrum of technical support for the Anesthesia service and communicate with the anesthesia supervisor regarding machine maintenance and supply needs. Provide support to various other services within the VMTH when anesthesia is not needed. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving anesthesia/surgery services objectives.

Qualifications
- Valid California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
- No Minimum Education required.
- Experience to independently provide treatment of patients whose conditions are likely to change on a moment to moment basis.
- Experience working in a veterinary hospital performing physical examinations and safe handling of multiple species.
- Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
- Experience performing venipuncture, placing vascular catheters inducing anesthesia, monitoring anesthesia, and recovering patients from anesthesia, working independently with and without direct supervision. Skills to restrain and handle dogs, cats and the ability to learn safety skills to work with and around livestock, and horses.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to engage effectively with diverse students, staff, clinicians, and clients and the skill to recognize and manage difficult situations.
- Experience in a clinical hospital setting with various species performing sedation and anesthesia.
Skills
- Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification in Anesthesia (preferred).
- Ability to recognize peri-anesthetic problems and concerns and to effectively communicate problems or concerns to the supervising anesthesia veterinarian in a timely manner.
- Knowledge of normal laboratory values for cats and dogs and have the desire to learn about livestock and horses.
