Responsibilities

The Laboratory Technician utilizes their surgical and procedural knowledge and expertise to provide expert professional services, including provision of required equipment and instrumentation, to support the needs of all Mayo and external educators, innovators and researchers.

  • Support the educational, clinical and research activities of the assigned laboratory, including preparing the environment, care and operation of equipment, instrument set-up, cleaning and sterilization.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and reset the laboratory following an activity.
  • Handle cadaveric tissue, communicate policies, procedures, and expectations, assist with data collection/management, and dispose of hazardous waste according to policy/protocol.
  • Assist with surgical procedures and support activities as assigned.
  • In laboratories where animal tissue is utilized, handle such tissue.
  • In laboratories with a donor program, provide general laboratory support including embalming, portioning, and tissue management.
  • In laboratories that work closely with simulation centers, cross-train to support simulation activities including the preparation and operation of simulation equipment.
  • Activities may require support outside of the regular working day, most commonly evenings and weekends.

Reports to and receives direction from appropriate campus leadership (Center for Procedural Innovation Coordinator, Operations Administrator, Operations Manager, or other as assigned). Works collaboratively with physicians, scientists, allied health staff, simulation center staff, research staff, course directors, and external visitors.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

  • High School Diploma / GED and five (5) years of surgical or procedural experience working within a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting, OR
  • Associate degree in life science or healthcare-related field and three (3) years of surgical or procedural experience working within a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a life science or healthcare-related field and one (1) year of surgical or procedural experience working within a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting.

Relevant experience may include work in the operating room, critical care or emergency medicine, bioskills or anatomy labs, willed body donation programs, medical examiner’s offices, veterinary clinics, or other settings involving hands-on procedural work.

Demonstrated proficiency in surgical or procedural techniques, instrumentation, and specimen handling, as well as proficiency in problem-solving, organization, and self-direction.

Additional Experience and/or Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to adapt to unpredictable situations and work hours, including occasional off-hours, evenings, and weekends.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • In laboratories where animal tissue is utilized, experience with animal procedures is preferred.
  • In laboratories that work closely with simulation centers, experience with simulation equipment is preferred.

Licensure/Certification Required: Certified Surgical Technician, Certified Forensic Autopsy Technician, or Veterinary Technician license with surgical or dissection experience preferred.

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

Pay

$25.87 - $38.05 / hour

Schedule

  • Part Time
  • Supplemental/PRN, as needed based on staffing
  • Schedule Details: Evenings, weekend schedule as needed
