Anatomic Pathology Technician

M - F, 12pm - 8:30pm

About the Role

The Anatomic Pathology Technician will receive, process, and accession specimens utilizing the hospital and laboratory information systems. Responsibilities include coverslipping, organizing, and accurately labeling all slides for microscopic evaluation, as well as performing data entry, tracking, filing, documentation, packing, and shipping within the department to assist histology and gross room personnel. May also assist in the autopsy service.

Responsibilities

• Ability to stay calm and organized in a high-stress, fast-paced environment while managing activity flow for accurate and quality specimen reporting.
• Accurately perform entry of complex data such as patient demographics, insurance information, and diagnostic codes in both hospital and laboratory information systems, following hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
• Complete continuing education and submit appropriate documentation where applicable.
• Participate in orienting new employees to the section.
• Demonstrate technical competence with LIS, EMR, and PC; follow regulatory, accreditation, safety, and hospital standards. Adhere to all policies and procedures and participate in inspection readiness.
• Maintain an adequate inventory of all supplies. Accurately prepare, label, and store reagents, controls, and specimens for analysis.
• Maintain, operate, troubleshoot instrumentation issues, and complete appropriate quality control documentation.
• Assist with case assembly, slide distribution, coverslipping, staining, processing, receiving slides and blocks for consultation, and sending out slides and blocks for consultation.
• Perform professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies such as assisting with frozen sections and staining, photographing pertinent specimens, and assisting during autopsy examinations.
• Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
• Retrieve specimens from the OR when necessary. Communicate with OR staff and surgeons to receive accurate information regarding patient history and specimen requests, and relay this information to technicians, PAs, residents, and pathologists in surgical pathology.
• Use and wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as necessary to perform job duties safely and minimize risk.
• Use, store, and dispose of biohazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps, and other potential hazardous materials according to policy.
• Perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or equivalent (Required)
• Associates Degree (Preferred)
• Basic computer skills
