About the role

Join one of Arizona's leading diagnostic labs at Sonora Quest, where your work directly supports life-saving medical testing and patient care. This position is responsible for the receipt of biological specimens into the department, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and performing waived testing. You will report to the department supervisor and may take direction from higher-level technical personnel.

This role assists the coordinator and supervisor in the functional operation of the histology section, ensuring continuity of daily workflow, prioritization of work, training of new employees, and maintenance and reporting of quality control and quality assurance systems. You will also perform waived and moderately complex tests as defined by CLIA '88, and may perform highly complex testing under general supervision. Additionally, you may serve as a grossing processor under the direction of a Certified Pathologist Assistant, receiving, examining, and processing pathology specimens.

In the absence of the supervisor or coordinator, this position provides overview support for the Anatomic Pathology section, performs all functions of an AP Laboratory Technician, trains employees on basic tasks, and serves as a resource for QC/QA duties.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process biological specimens into the department.
  • Prepare samples for analytical testing and perform waived testing.
  • Assist in the functional operation of the histology section, ensuring continuity of daily workflow and work prioritization.
  • Train new employees and maintain quality control and quality assurance systems and procedure manuals.
  • Solve technical problems and participate in research and development activities.
  • Perform waived and moderately complex tests accurately and timely, as defined by CLIA '88.
  • Perform highly complex testing under general supervision.
  • Act as a grossing processor under the direction of a Certified Pathologist Assistant, receiving, examining, and processing pathology specimens.
  • Provide overview support for the Anatomic Pathology section in the absence of the supervisor or coordinator.
  • Perform all functions of an AP Laboratory Technician, train employees on basic tasks, and serve as a resource for QC/QA duties.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment.
  • Ensure the workstation is clean, stocked, and disinfected at the end of the shift.
  • React and adjust to daily workflow requirements as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and eligibility for ASCP HT registry, OR ASCP HT registry, OR a Bachelor’s degree with Anatomic Pathology department-specific certification documentation within 6 months of hire date.
  • Willingness to perform and cross-train in all areas of the Anatomic Pathology section.
  • Demonstrated competency in all aspects of work.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.

Skills

  • Ability to perform well in the supervisor’s absence and provide guidance on pre-analytical, waived, and moderately complex testing issues.
