About the role
The Analytical Chemist will perform analytical testing of in-house products by various analytical techniques, as well as provide technical support to the laboratory team in support of Materion's requirements for customers and the ISO 17025 management system. The Analytical Chemist reports to the Analytical Lab Manager.
Responsibilities
- Operation, calibration, preventive maintenance, and routine troubleshooting of analytical instruments, including ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and AAS.
- Work with the Senior Analytical Chemist to qualify, develop, validate, and continuously improve the analytical equipment, test methods, and practices used in the lab to generate high quality and timely test results.
- Work with the Senior Analytical Chemist to provide technical support in relation to equipment, test methods, and practices. Examples include the selection, installation, maintenance, and method development for any equipment used in the lab.
- Participate in qualification of new analytical instruments and implementation of new analytical methods.
- Write/review Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.
- Provide effective training to other lab personnel on use of analytical equipment and systems.
- Proficient in the use of computers, standard office software and systems (e.g., LIMS, SAP), and the ability to perform data entry accurately and quickly with no errors or transpositions.
- Maintain open and active communication with management and peers regarding workflow, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Follow all clean-up and housekeeping procedures. Comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations. Provide suggestions regarding quality and safety improvements.
Qualifications
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a two- or four-year degree (preferably in a STEM field). OR High school diploma, technical school, or GED required at a minimum, coupled with 7-10 years of relevant analytical laboratory experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Sound decision making skills are required. The individual must be able to take decisive action based on limited input and also determine when a decision requires supervisory input.
- Able to perform intermediate mathematical calculations
- Basic understanding of ASTM standards and requirements for ISO 17025 accreditation
- Proficient in the use of Excel functions, LIMS (including maintenance of functions related to daily operations), and other standard office software.

The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
