Analyst Accounting Policy and Controls
About the role
This is an open position within FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The reporting location for this onsite position may be based at any FirstEnergy Service location, including but not limited to Akron, OH; Williamsport, MD; Reading, PA; Greensburg, PA; and Erie, PA. This position is in the Accounting Policy and Controls organization within the Controller’s department.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements
- Align with FirstEnergy’s Core Values and Behaviors as well as priorities of the Controller and Finance organization
- Assist and coordinate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close entries and processes for Energy Delivery by developing or approving financial journal entries and accruals
- Prepare capitalization and reclassification journal entries such as Rubber Goods, Lineman Essentials, Small Tools, Claims and Make Ready write off entries
- Conduct Non-Consumption SD (Sales Distribution) Reserve process on a monthly basis
- Storm Resettlement Process between capital and O&M on a monthly basis as well routine updates to variables within the process
- Prepare Blackline reconciliation for related accounts
- Support Mutual Assistance Storm accounting process when applicable
- Facilitate and maintain SOX Controls and PPE narratives as well as operating controls around in-servicing
- Strategic guidance to regulated operations such as Capital vs O&M determination
- Develop and conduct pre-unitization controls on projects and work orders
- Support annual audit inquiries and testing
- Procedure development and adherence related to accounting transactions through existing and new system integrations, such as CREWS, CASCADE, OMA, FieldNet, PowerPlan, and SAP
- Support regulatory filings and reporting
- Ensure effective operation of internal controls through collaboration with General Accounting, Technical Accounting, Property Accounting, and Financial Reporting departments
- Perform financial analysis, evaluations and provide ad-hoc support as necessary
- Extract and manipulate data using query tools for various databases and systems
- Learning and exercising sound decision making and developing alternatives and recommendations to improve work processes
- Consistently anticipate and deliver against a defined action plan
- Conduct business-specific research, analyze data, interpret results and assist with implementation activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related discipline is required. Advanced degree a plus.
- Minimum 7 years’ related work experience is required. Relevant work experience includes but is not limited to a working knowledge of financial acumen, understanding of SAP and FERC uniform system of accounts, reporting and forecasting processes, rate and regulatory filings, accounting, taxes, capital markets, credit rating agency protocols, and financial statement analysis.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Word).

- Proficient with SAP, Qlikview and PowerBI applications & a willingness and ability to evolve to an expert level.
- Familiarity with GAAP and FERC accounting/reporting.
- Familiarity with SAP, PowerPlan, CREWS, CASCADE, and other work management systems preferred.
- Familiarity with SAP cost flows and cost collectors (Orders, WBS, Cost Centers) and FEU work management process and procedures preferred.
