The Ambulatory Surgical Unit Assistant supports the delivery of patient care under the direction of registered nurses and the surgical team.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients of all ages throughout surgical and procedural areas.
  • Assist with preoperative and postoperative patient flow.
  • Perform instrument decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization.
  • Maintain surgical equipment and supply inventory.
  • Assemble case carts and ensure operating rooms are sanitized and prepared in accordance with safety, infection prevention, and regulatory standards.
  • Support equipment maintenance, specimen transport, waste management, and departmental operations to promote efficient, high-quality patient care.
  • Escort, transport, and discharge patients of all ages throughout the surgical and procedural areas.
  • Assist with preoperative preparation, including patient orientation, vital signs, point-of-care testing, and securing patient belongings.
  • Assist clinical staff with patient positioning, examinations, procedures, and basic technical patient care tasks.
  • Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, tracking, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Monitor sterilization processes, maintain documentation logs, and ensure compliance with infection control standards.
  • Prepare and assemble case carts, stock supplies, and maintain operating room readiness.
  • Sanitize operating rooms, assemble and maintain equipment, and coordinate repairs and replacement of surgical equipment.
  • Manage transportation of specimens, medical equipment, and regulated medical waste in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Maintain inventory controls, monitor medication and solution expiration dates, and support departmental quality and safety initiatives.
  • Complete specialized training in surgical sterilization procedures, medical terminology, and patient care, including CPR certification.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross.
  • One (1) year experience in a healthcare or related environment.
  • Must successfully complete basic competencies and Level A CPR certification within the probationary period.

On-the-Job Training: After selection and placement into the position, three (3) months on-the-job training to become familiar with specific department procedures, medical terminology, equipment, and sterilization procedures.

Physical Requirements

Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Requires a full range of body motion including pulling, lifting, pushing, and transferring patients to and from various apparatus.

Personal Protective Equipment: Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Schedule

Full-time, days, 7:00am—5:30pm. No weekends or holidays.

Pay

The pay range displayed reflects the anticipated range for new hires. The range is $18.50 to $25.20 per hour. A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set, and education. The pay range does not include any applicable pay practices (e.g., shift differentials, overtime, etc.) or the value of Cleveland Clinic’s benefits package (e.g., healthcare, dental and vision benefits, retirement savings account contributions, etc.).
