Healthcare$134k–$182k/yrFull-time

UVA Health Outpatient Retail Pharmacy is seeking a night shift Ambulatory Pharmacist to bring strong clinical judgment, independence, and patient-centered decision-making to a highly visible overnight pharmacy role. This distinctive opportunity combines the accessibility of outpatient retail pharmacy with the clinical depth of an academic health system. As the overnight pharmacist, you will support emergency department patients, discharged patients, employees, and community members while serving as a primary clinical decision-maker during overnight operations.

About the Role

The Night Shift Ambulatory Pharmacist serves as the primary pharmacist for overnight outpatient retail pharmacy operations at the Education Resource Center. This role offers a high level of autonomy, meaningful clinical responsibility, and a unique 7 nights on / 7 nights off schedule that supports both professional impact and personal balance.

In this role, you will blend retail pharmacy workflow with health-system level clinical decision-making. You will independently evaluate medication orders, support safe discharge processes, communicate directly with providers, and help patients receive the medications and education they need during urgent overnight care transitions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently review medication orders for safety, appropriateness, and clinical accuracy
  • Make real-time overnight clinical decisions with confidence and accountability
  • Support emergency department patients, discharged patients, employees, community patients, and urgent overnight prescription needs
  • Communicate directly with providers to resolve medication-related questions or concerns
  • Support safe patient discharge processes through timely medication review and issue resolution
  • Provide medication counseling and patient education when needed
  • Partner with technicians and other overnight pharmacy colleagues to maintain efficient workflow
  • Collaborate with inpatient pharmacists, emergency department pharmacists, and other overnight clinical pharmacy resources
  • Prioritize patient needs in an environment with a smaller immediate staffing footprint
  • Contribute to expanded overnight clinical services as outpatient pharmacy practice continues to evolve

As Central Fill expands, this position is expected to become increasingly focused on higher-value clinical work, including clinical profile review, discharge planning support, medication reconciliation efforts, and alignment between discharge plans and medication therapy. This creates a strong opportunity for a pharmacist who wants to practice beyond transactional dispensing and help shape the future of overnight ambulatory pharmacy services.

Why UVA Health

At UVA Health, pharmacy professionals are part of one of the nation’s premier academic health systems, working across acute care, ambulatory clinic, retail, specialty, infusion, post-acute care, and other advanced pharmacy practice settings. This role offers the ability to practice in an outpatient retail pharmacy environment while still accessing the broader clinical strength, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development culture of a major academic medical center.

For an overnight pharmacist, this difference matters. You are not isolated in a traditional retail setting. You have access to trained technicians, pharmacy leadership, emergency department pharmacists, inpatient pharmacy colleagues, and other overnight clinical resources when collaboration or escalation is needed. You are trusted to make independent decisions while remaining connected to a larger health-system pharmacy network.

This opportunity stands out because it offers:

  • A unique 7-on / 7-off overnight lifestyle schedule
  • Significant autonomy and primary clinical decision-making responsibility
  • A consistent primary location at the Education Resource Center
  • Easy garage parking and a simplified commute experience
  • A stronger support structure than many traditional overnight retail pharmacy roles
  • Collaboration with inpatient pharmacy teams, emergency department pharmacists, and other overnight clinical resources
  • The chance to support emergency department and discharge patients during important medication transitions
  • A role that blends retail accessibility with academic health-system clinical standards
  • Opportunities to participate in the expansion of outpatient pharmacy services
  • Exposure to Central Fill implementation and evolving pharmacist-led clinical care models
  • Leadership support, escalation pathways, and an open communication culture
  • Opportunities for advancement and long-term professional growth
  • Additional earning potential through optional extra shift coverage
