AMBULANCE OPERATOR (AT-WILL)
About the role
The City of Torrance seeks qualified individuals to join the Torrance Fire Department as Ambulance Operators. This position operates city-owned ambulances and provides patient transport services during medical emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Utilize EMT-1 level skills to attain and document vital signs, bandage, splint, lift patients into an ambulance, and assist firefighter/paramedics.
- Work a fixed 48/96 schedule averaging 48 to 56 hours per week, with potential for 40-hour weeks during peak staffing.
- Be available to work irregular hours, weekends, holidays, or overtime as assigned.
Requirements
- California Class C driver’s license and Ambulance Driver certificate from DMV.
- Current Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) certificate from Los Angeles County.
- Valid Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
- Completion of a State of California Fire Academy is preferred.
- Experience as a Fire Explorer, Auxiliary Firefighter, and/or Fire Cadet in the Torrance Fire Department is highly desirable.
Qualifications
- Equivalent to high school supplemented by college-level coursework and/or specialized training in fire science.
- Must be 18 years of age.
Skills
- Knowledge of EMT-1 level skills.
- Ability to work irregular hours and overtime.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.

The pay for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The Ambulance Operator position is a full-time, non-safety, at-will position with a term of employment not exceeding twelve (12) months. The Fire Chief may extend the 12-month period up to four times, for a maximum total service time of five (5) years.
