Alternative Provision Classroom Support VOLUNTEER – Worthing

About the role

Our classroom support volunteers play a vital and varied role within our centres. Primarily, they support our young people, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities through building and nurturing constructive relationships and promoting their inclusion, acceptance and self-esteem. We value our students’ differences and interact with them based on their individual needs to help them to learn, develop and achieve specific learning goals. Our volunteer teaching assistants support this by implementing specific strategies based on what has been agreed by our teaching and senior staff, to ensure all our students have equal access to opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Support our young people, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
• Build and nurture constructive relationships with our young people
• Monitor and record progress, provide feedback, supervise students, and assist with 1:1 support
• Assist with lesson planning and implementation

Requirements

• Previous experience of working in a classroom environment or another alternative provision
• The ability to work effectively with others as a competent team member and the confidence to work alone when required
• Good time management and organisational skills
• The ability to relate well to young people with a range of educational needs
• An open-minded, non-judgmental and empathetic approach to young people from a wide range of backgrounds and situations
• Experience in SEN
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Good levels of numeracy and literacy, preferably with a confident level of computer literacy
• A knowledge of health & safety
• A good knowledge of Safeguarding (desirable)
• The ability to take instructions and a willingness to learn

Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required for this role, but a good knowledge of health & safety and a good knowledge of Safeguarding are desirable.
