Alternative Education Teacher - Metro Detention - 1.0 FTE - 26-27 SY
About the role
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking an Alternative Education Teacher to support academic and SEL skills development for students in the Metro Detention setting. The teacher will work in a co-teaching environment alongside special education staff.
Responsibilities
- Instructing students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as critical reading instruction, discussions, project-based learning, and demonstrations
- Adapting teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests
- Establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicating those objectives to students
- Establishing classroom management practices for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible, and observing behavioral requirements of the Detention facility
- Communicating with parents/guardians to discuss their student's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their resource needs
- Establishing, implementing, and maintaining learning plans for enrolled students
- Prioritize critical reading, math, and SEL instruction
- Adapting instruction to support a range of student learning styles, skill sets, and growth areas
- Actively participate in Special Education meetings
- Develop academic targets based on student assessment data
- Coordinating with students, families, and school personnel to report progress
- Communicate effectively with OYR support staff and County Partners to support student progress and wellbeing
- Develop lessons and projects with Metro Detention CC Teacher and larger Metro Teaching Staff
- EFFECTIVELY assign student support tasks to Metro Para-Professional
- Communicate with County Detention Staff to coordinate schedules and roles of Interns
- Cooking and cleaning duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Official transcripts are required for formal employment
- Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) teaching license in Alternative Education and a secondary teaching license to cover the grade level(s) being taught

Pay
District Wide Annual Salary Minimum Annual Compensation: $52,154 (25-26 TE Salary Schedule)

Length of Contract: 192 days
Application Instructions
Applications are considered on a rolling basis. MMSD will consider applicants who are fully licensed before considering applicants who are not yet licensed. If you do not already have an active Wisconsin teaching license, you must obtain and maintain the necessary license(s) for the position. An application must be on file within 30 days of starting your employment with MMSD. Failure to do so will result in your contract being voided. The district does not provide financial support for the continued education that is required to achieve the certification. The district does not select or endorse any particular certification program that leads to the required Wisconsin teaching license. An unlicensed candidate can be considered, but they must be hired by a school district in order to apply for a One-Year License with Stipulations with DPI.
