About the role

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA), is recruiting for an AMYA Instructor. This position is in the General Government (GGU) bargaining unit at a range 16. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our Definition FAQ to determine if you qualify.

Responsibilities

Create tailored lesson plans and curricula across multiple disciplines including English, Math, Social Studies, and Science, aligned with Cognia standards.
Develop assessment tools and evaluate program effectiveness.
Implement diverse instructional strategies to enhance student understanding and skills.
Foster individual goal-setting and responsibility.
Maintain positive relationships with staff, parents, and outside agencies.
Supervise student work, assign lessons, correct homework, and administer tests, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and promoting a supportive learning environment.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
Two years of experience working with children and/or young adults grades K through 12 in an academic environment as an instructor, instructional aide, counselor, or similar capacity.

Skills

Basic employment skills: Resume writing, job interview techniques, and career exploration.
Life coping skills: Personal financial management, teamwork, anger management, and drug and alcohol avoidance strategies to support responsible decision-making.
Health & Hygiene: Nutritional basics, substance awareness, and positive personal relationships.
Service to the Community: Civic responsibility by giving back to the community through the completion of a minimum of 40 hours of community service.
Physical Fitness: Regular engagement in daily exercise activities and intramural sports that promote physical wellness and healthy habits.

Job Specific Requirements

Work closely with large groups of at-risk youth, which can be challenging and sometimes stressful. This role requires patience, resilience, and strong communication skills, but it also offers the rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people.
Candidates must be able to pass a federal background security check in order to qualify for military base access. All job offers are conditional pending the successful completion of the background check and issuance of a Defense Biometrics Identification System card. The individual must also be able to maintain the clearance throughout employment.
