Here at Amazon, we embrace our differences and are committed to furthering our culture of diversity and inclusion within our teams. We are delivering to customers quickly, cost-effectively, and safely in less than an hour, scaling this capability through innovative solutions. Join the Prime Air team to work on cutting-edge technology that solves real-world delivery challenges and directly impacts Amazon’s customers worldwide.

About the role

We're looking for an Applied Scientist with expertise in developing simulations for traffic management algorithms, including strategic deconfliction, tactical deconfliction, or detect-and-avoid systems. This role focuses on managing a large number of concurrent autonomous drone flights sharing airspace with other aircraft. You will build simulation tools and algorithms to solve this challenge at scale, contributing to conflict detection and resolution methodologies and developing related software systems for operational use in package delivery.

The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguous environments, takes calculated risks, and builds consensus on critical technical decisions. If you enjoy solving unprecedented, large-scale problems, Prime Air offers opportunities to be a disruptor, innovator, and problem solver.

Responsibilities

  • Model traffic management frameworks using layered conflict detection and resolution strategies to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.
  • Develop fundamental simulation infrastructure, including discrete event simulation tooling.
  • Build expert knowledge of mitigation layers and conduct in-depth scientific research on alternative conflict resolution solutions.
  • Drive impactful systems from concept through development, directly benefiting Amazon customers.
  • Engage in substantial software development for both prototyping and production environments.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
  • PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Unix/Linux environments.
  • Background in professional software development.

Pay

Base salary range: $142,800.00 - $193,200.00 USD annually (Seattle, WA). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.

Benefits

  • Health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D, with optional supplemental life plans).
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Mental Health Support, and Medical Advice Line.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for healthcare and dependent care.
  • Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage.
  • 401(k) matching.
  • Paid time off and parental leave.
  • Sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
