Summary

Leads and participates in enforcing laws on airport property and in providing for safety for the public and airport operations.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain contact with officers to provide advice or assistance, and to respond to more difficult situations;
  • Supervise recordkeeping by officers and forward reports through the chain of command;
  • Assist Airport Police Lieutenant in compiling data and statistics on police operations;
  • Project a positive role model and utilize leadership skills in dealing with officers;
  • Serve as first-line supervisor in the chain of command;
  • Receive orders from superiors and provide direction to subordinate officers;
  • Review and approve reports in the absence of the Airport Police Lieutenant, or as needed. Submit reports through the chain of command for final approval;
  • Approve days off requested by officers;
  • Perform evaluations of officers' performance and initiate disciplinary action for violations of department, city, state, or federal policies or laws;
  • Resolve complaints from the public or from officers in a professional manner;
  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent with an additional three to five years of responsible experience as a law enforcement officer; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following: Certified Peace Officer; Texas Driver's License.

Physical Exam Required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge Of

  • The principles of modern police administration;
  • Accepted practices and procedures of police science;
  • Aviation Department, City, federal, and state laws, policies, and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Instruct and advise subordinates in all pertinent phases of law enforcement and FAA security procedures;
  • Plan, assign, and coordinate the work of a number of subordinate officers;
  • Establish and maintain effective public relations;
  • Communicate effectively with others;
  • Provide general automotive assistance to stranded motorists;
  • Receive orders from superiors and give direction to subordinate officers;
  • Review and approve reports.

Physical Requirements

Maintain The Ability To

  • Stand and walk during the shift.
  • Frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds;
  • Frequently carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds;
  • Push and pull objects;
  • Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist;
  • Place arms above, at, and below shoulder height;
  • Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
