About the role
The City of Winter Haven is seeking a motivated and skilled Airport Operations Technician to join our team. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the safe, efficient, and seamless operation of airport activities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, an effective problem solver, and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Pay rate: $17.57 per hour minimum with annual Step for Performance Pay Adjustments.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and ensures the safety of runways, taxiways, and ramps for aircraft operations.
- Conducts aircraft fueling and marshaling.
- Maintains airport facilities and grounds.
- Performs daily inspections of all airport operational areas and equipment for compliance with federal, state, local, and airport rules and regulations.
- Fuels aircraft utilizing safe practices and procedures.
- Directs and parks aircraft on ramps.
- Assists the public; responds to routine questions or complaints and requests for service; initiates problem resolution.
- Prepares and maintains records of work performed.
- Operates vehicles and equipment safely to perform work and accomplish related tasks as directed.

Requirements
- Willingness to learn the principles, practices, methods, materials, and tools used in airport operations.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with aircraft operations, high voltage airfield lighting systems, and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of the techniques and procedures of fueling and parking aircraft.
- Ability to stay alert and aware at all times to prevent injury or accidents.
- Ability to read and interpret diagrams, technical specifications, operational manuals, and regulatory publications.
- Ability to learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation.
- Ability to operate and coordinate daily activities in close proximity to aircraft.
- Ability to communicate on two-way radios.
- Ability to utilize computer technology to store/access data and maintain records.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read and interpret rules, follow instructions, and maintain confidentiality of materials.
- Ability to operate vehicles and related equipment skillfully and safely.
- Strong organizational skills and a solid work ethic.
- Any combination of training and experience which will indicate the possession of the skills, knowledge, and abilities listed above. Experience in performing related work preferred.
Qualifications
- Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.
- Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
Physical / Environmental Factors

- Primary duties are performed in an outdoor environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, aviation and vehicular traffic, and related hazards including electrical voltage, the use of power tools and equipment, and hazardous chemicals and materials.
- Sufficient strength to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds for varying distances.
- Sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina, and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and other physical exertions.
