About the Role

Under the general direction of airport senior and facilities supervisors, the Airfield Maintenance Specialist functions as a lead worker while performing tasks and duties necessary to ensure the day-to-day safe, secure, convenient, and efficient operations of airports operated by the Salt Lake City Department of Airports. This role involves a broad range of airfield-related services, including safety, security, and maintenance work across various facilities and crafts, with a focus on light and heavy equipment operation.

You will operate and train co-workers on the safe and proper use of construction, snow removal, and other miscellaneous equipment. Coordination with specialized airport divisions, equipment maintenance, and emergency response support are key aspects of this role. This position requires a high level of situational awareness, problem-solving skills, and customer service, along with adherence to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections, cleaning, and lubrication of construction and snow removal equipment.
  • Operate, maintain, and prepare trucks and heavy equipment for airfield operations, including snow and ice removal.
  • Respond to airport emergencies and provide support services for first responders and emergency response teams.
  • Perform skilled maintenance work in areas such as asphalt/pavement repair, road construction, building demolition, concrete construction and repair, fencing installation and repair, and landscaping/grounds-keeping (e.g., mowing, weeding, planting, pruning, pesticide application).
  • Operate specialized heavy equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Asphalt pavers, rollers, loaders, graders, skid-steers, backhoes, trenchers, track-hoes, sub-drainage equipment.
    • Bobtails, 10-wheelers, tractor trailers, airfield tractors, sweepers, high-pressure washers, scrubbers, cranes, and aerial lift equipment.
  • Operate and maintain computerized pavement marking equipment, pavement marking trucks, shot blasters, pavement grinders, sandblasters, and hand stripers.
  • Perform snow and ice removal operations using specialized equipment (e.g., runway snowplows, snow blowers, chemical spreaders, potassium sprayers, ramp push plows) in accordance with FAA guidelines.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment as needed.
  • Conduct general maintenance duties, including garbage removal, sub-drainage maintenance, signage installation/repair, holiday décor installation, and airport boundary fence maintenance per TSA mandates.
  • Maintain communication with Airport Tower Control, Ground Control, and Airfield Operations while adhering to FAA regulations in the Aircraft Operating Area (AOA).
  • Train co-workers on the safe and proper use of airport equipment and policies.
  • Oversee crew maintenance functions, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Respond to and assist in aircraft emergencies, coordinating with leads, supervisors, and aircraft owners for safe aircraft removal.
  • Maintain daily logs of hours, materials used, and project status, reporting issues and recommending action plans.

Requirements

  • One year (Specialist I) or three years (Specialist II) of experience operating heavy/light equipment, with a thorough understanding of motor vehicle operation laws.
  • Knowledge of proper operation, safety requirements, and daily maintenance of various types of heavy/light equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a minimum Class "B" (Class "A" preferred) or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. A current DOT medical card is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety rules, hazards, and accident prevention measures associated with heavy/light equipment operation.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including shifts (days, afternoons, graveyards), weekends, holidays, extended shifts, overtime, stand-by, and callouts.
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the Post Offer Employment Test.
  • Must pass a criminal history records check to obtain and maintain FAA certification for unescorted access to secure aviation facilities and aircraft movement areas.
  • Ability to relate well with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Must pass random drug screenings.
  • For Specialist II: Thorough knowledge of airfield and landside operations, including maintenance functions and snow/ice removal requirements, along with an understanding of FAA rules and regulations.

Pay

Hourly pay ranges based on qualifications and experience:

  • Specialist I: $21.57 - $28.35
  • Specialist II: $24.28 - $31.96
  • Specialist III: $26.57 - $34.96
