Aircraft Worker Aviation Structural Mechanic

Amentum is hiring qualified Aviation Structural Mechanics and Technicians to support U.S. Navy Aviation maintenance operations at NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA (VFA-106).

About the role

The Aircraft Worker repairs aircraft following orders of higher-grade technicians and assists in troubleshooting malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems.

This worker repairs, replaces, and rebuilds aircraft structures such as wings and fuselage, and functional components including rigging, surface controls, and plumbing and hydraulic units, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, rivet gun, and drills.

This mechanic reads and interprets manufacturers' and airline's maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.

Responsibilities

• Performs progressive, phase, periodic, and other hourly, conditional, or calendar inspections.
• Examines reciprocating engines for cracked cylinders and oil leaks, and listens to operating engines to detect and diagnose malfunctions, such as sticking or burnt valves.
• Inspects jet engines and components for cracks, corrosion, foreign object damage, burned areas, distortions, security, warping, wear, and missing segments.
• Inspects jet engine turbine blades to detect cracks, distortion, corrosion, burn-out, security, or breaks.
• Tests engine operation using testing equipment, such as ignition analyzer, compression checker, distributor timer, ammeter, and jet calibration (Jetcal) tester, to locate source of malfunction.
• Replaces or repairs worn or damaged components, such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine-mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
• Removes engine from aircraft using hoist or forklift truck, disassembles and inspects parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, and repairs or replaces defective engine parts before reassembling and installing the engine in the aircraft.
• Adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories.
• Performs preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
• Performs miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
• Supervises the jacking and towing of aircraft.
• Enters maintenance records with descriptions of work performed and verifies satisfactory completion.
• Services engines and airframe components at line stations, making repairs short of overhaul to keep aircraft in safe operating condition.
• May specialize in work, repair, and modification of structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies.
• May specialize in engine repair.
• May be required to be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Requirements

• Must have completed Navy Aviation Structural Mechanics (AM) “A” School or equivalent.
• Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks is mandatory.
• Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties.
• Must have a valid Virginia or North Carolina Driver’s license (if North Carolina resident).
• Work is performed primarily outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
• Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Must be able to meet physical requirements associated with and/or pass any medical examination requirements related to performing daily assigned tasks.
• Must be able to stand, climb, bend, and stoop for extended periods.
• Must be able to obtain a favorable T3 Secret eligibility status.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (U.S. Citizenship is required).
• Must pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check as well as favorable fingerprints in EQIP.
• May be required to complete a SF-85/86 in EQIP to maintain possession of a CAC card.
• Shift work is required, and detachments are possible.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3 years of F/A-18 A-G Organizational-level aircraft system maintenance experience.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Experience with F/A-18 Tire & Wheel, Hydraulic Contamination, NAN-Cart, Hydraulic Jenny, NC-10/108, A/M24M-6, A/M37M2, A/S-32A-44.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $34.86 per hour, plus $7.80 per hour (up to 40 hours per week) for Health & Welfare.
