About the Role

Oversees and performs maintenance on helicopters (CH-47, AH-64, UH-60), excluding repair of systems according to drawings, blueprints, directives, technical manuals, and safety procedures. Inspects aerospace weapon systems components and support equipment for structural integrity using nondestructive inspection (NDI) methods and performs fluid analysis. May perform any Aircraft Mechanic I task.

Responsibilities include overseeing removal and installation of aircraft subsystem assemblies such as engines, rotors, gearboxes, transmissions, mechanical flight controls, and their components. Oversees servicing, lubrication, and preparation of aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks. Performs scheduled and special inspections, limited maintenance operational checks, and troubleshooting of aircraft subsystems using special tools and equipment. Oversees use and maintenance of tools, special tools, and ground support equipment. Prepares forms and records related to aircraft maintenance, removes and disassembles defective parts, and maintains supplies while performing preventive maintenance.

Performs NDI tasks including processing parts, standardizing equipment, conducting tests, interpreting results, and documenting findings. Detects flaws such as cracks, delamination, voids, processing defects, and heat damage using penetrant, eddy current, magnetic particles, radiographic, optical, and ultrasonic test equipment. Determines metallurgical information of components and operates, maintains, and inspects NDI equipment. Provides guidance to trainers and Level I personnel and develops written instructions from approved procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect aerospace weapon systems components and support equipment for structural integrity.
  • Perform fluid analysis and nondestructive inspections.
  • Oversee removal, installation, and servicing of aircraft subsystem assemblies (engines, rotors, gearboxes, transmissions, mechanical flight controls).
  • Prepare aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Perform scheduled and special inspections; assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting aircraft subsystems.
  • Use and maintain tools, special tools, and ground support equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain forms and records related to aircraft maintenance.
  • Remove and disassemble defective aircraft parts; maintain supplies and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Process parts and standardize equipment for NDI operations.
  • Conduct tests, interpret results, and document findings for acceptance or rejection.
  • Detect flaws (cracks, delamination, voids, processing defects, heat damage) using various NDI methods (penetrant, eddy current, magnetic particles, radiographic, optical, ultrasonic).
  • Determine metallurgical information of components (alloy, temper, conductivity).
  • Operate, maintain, and inspect NDI equipment; perform operator maintenance on shop equipment.
  • Ensure lockout/tagout procedures are followed prior to equipment maintenance.
  • Perform silver recovery functions and handle/dispose of hazardous waste.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to trainers and Level I personnel in certified NDI methods.
  • Develop written instructions from approved general procedures.
  • Analyze wear metal content reports on engine lubricating oil and recommend corrective actions.
  • Establish and monitor radiation areas for radiographic operations; track personnel exposure data.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
  • U.S. military technical school or specialized training course (desired); certification of education level (required).
  • Valid up-to-date A&P license (optional).
  • Three years of aviation maintenance experience, three years of rotary wing aircraft experience, and two years on the assigned Mission Design Series (MDS). All experience must be within the six most recent years.
  • Trained and qualified per NAS 410 or ASNT-CP-189 to the assigned level.
  • Previous experience in maintenance, modification, and repair of tactical aircraft systems and components.
  • Completion of an initial Non-Destructive Inspection Level II training course and current basic qualifications.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must provide own tools/toolbox (recruiters will provide requirements upon selection).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NACI(T1) Public Trust Security Clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization; U.S. Citizenship is required.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft systems on the assigned MDS (CH-47, AH-64, UH-60).
  • Advanced knowledge of aircraft unique tools (test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, hydraulic press machine, and tools listed in the MDS Maintenance Allocation Chart).
  • Advanced knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
  • Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
  • Experience inspecting aeronautical maintenance performed by aircraft mechanics.
  • Ability to lead teams through complex aircraft tasks and make entries in aircraft logs and records.

Physical Requirements & Working Environment

  • Walk and stand on level/inclined surfaces for extended periods.
  • Climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Crouch, crawl, grasp, or handle objects; use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee, and reach above/below shoulders.
  • Lift/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Type using a standard keyboard for communication and software applications.
  • Handle dirty parts and lubricants; wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
  • Operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklifts, etc.
  • Work in maintenance shops or outdoors in drafty, noisy, and dirty environments.
  • Exposure to extreme noise, electrical shock hazards, or moving mechanical parts/vehicles.
  • Work in austere environments and all-weather conditions.

Pay

Hourly rate: $45.98 - $47.59 (set by Collective Bargaining Agreement).
