Aircraft Mechanic I (Sheetmetal)
About the role
The Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic I, maintenance fabricates, installs and maintains in good repair the sheet-metal equipment and fixtures of an establishment. Work involves most of the following: planning and laying out all types of sheet-metal maintenance work from blueprints, models, or other specifications, setting up and operating all available types of sheet-metal working machines, using a variety of hand tools in cutting, bending, forming, shaping, fitting and assembling, and installing sheet-metal articles as required.
Responsibilities
- Read and analyzes work request and applicable specifications or similar work data.
- Develop and draw working sketches showing views, sections, or profiles.
- Manufactures and fabricates aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft.
- Determines type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material and repair methods to use.
- Lays out, cuts forms, joins, assembles and installs items.
- Develops parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available.
- Lays out template, transcribes information from template and manufactures double contour parts with configuration in several planes.
- Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws and/or seaming.
- Ensures finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, appearance in accordance with specification and/or similar requirements.
- May be required to work inside fuel tanks (e.g., CH 47) or other confined spaces.
- Follows all safety procedures and for using appropriate personal protective equipment to include checking protective devices for proper operation and maintains a safe clean work environment.
Requirements
- Valid up-to-date A&P license. If no A&P license, shall have three (3) years aviation maintenance experience, two (2) years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two (2) years on the assigned MDS (Sheetmetal).
- All experience must be within the six (6) most recent years.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Two (2) or more year’s actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft.
- Knowledge & Skills: Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts. Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair. Basic knowledge of electrical theory and a thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers. Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
Qualifications
- Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects and may be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks.
- Participate in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
- Possess the level of experience to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by Mechanics.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
- Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
- Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
- Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
- May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.
- Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.
- Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.
- Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
- May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.
- Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
- May work in maintenance shop or outside.
- Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
- May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
- May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
- May be expected to work in austere environments and all-weather conditions.
Compensation Details
$37.83 per hour.
